Fabulous story... spanning all emotions. Beautifully read. Spoilt somewhat by the dodgy recording... with long pauses mid sentence, disjointed at times... but the story was so grand I put up with this!

Margot Lewis is the agony aunt for The Cambridge Examiner. Her advice column, Dear Amy, gets all kinds of letters - but none like the one she's just received: 'Dear Amy, I don't know where I am. I've been kidnapped and am being held prisoner by a strange man. I'm afraid he'll kill me. Please help me soon, Bethan Avery.' Bethan Avery has been missing for nearly two decades. This is surely some cruel hoax. But as more letters arrive, they contain information that was never made public.

Superbly performed and beautifully written psycho thriller. It was both disturbing and addictive. I could see and feel everything in the book.

Midwinter in the early years of this century. A teenage girl on holiday has gone missing in the hills at the heart of England. The villagers are called up to join the search, fanning out across the moors as the police set up roadblocks and a crowd of news reporters descends on their usually quiet home. Meanwhile, there is work that must still be done: cows milked, fences repaired, stone cut, pints poured, beds made, sermons written, a pantomime rehearsed. The search for the missing girl goes on, but so does everyday life. As it must.

I kept waiting for this book to get better... but it didn't. I am sure if you lived in that part of the world you would have enjoyed the narrative that beautifully followed the seasons - but very little substance.
