Story
In 1984, Detective Eric O'Malley investigated the bizarre deaths of a young couple, their bodies found naked by the side of a creek in Sydney's northern suburbs. Shortly before their demise, O'Malley learned, the pair had attended a swingers' party. The case was barely open before it was deemed an accident. But O'Malley knew it was murder. He just couldn't prove it. Thirty-five years later, O'Malley is found dead in his flat in what looks like a drug overdose. But his son James knows something's amiss. His dad was close to solving that case after all these years.

Somehow nostalgic, probably the delivery, reminded me of a radio serial but nevertheless definitely worth listening to. Narrated by great Australian actors, this suspenseful drama kept me listening when I should have been doing other things!! Highly recommended.

Story
Darren has two big talents: cricket and trouble. It is no surprise, then, that he becomes an Australian sporting star of the bad-boy variety - one of those men who's always got away with things and just keeps going...until the day we meet him, middle aged and in the boot of a car, and everything pointing towards a shallow grave.

Not at all what I expected! No spoilers but a big surprise at the end. An insight into the back story of the world of cricket. Humble beginnings, extraordinary talent and hours of practice produced two outstanding cricketers who were also brothers. Very different lives, one a law-abiding, rule following, upstanding citizen and the other? Not so much. A well executed tale I just couldn’t stop listening too. Perfect narration because the voice totally fitted the character. I highly recommend this book.

Set against the backdrop of an eerie island town in the dead of winter, The Wife and the Widow is a mystery-thriller told from two perspectives: Kate, a widow whose grief is compounded by what she learns about her dead husband’s secret life; and Abby, an island local whose world is turned upside down when she’s forced to confront the evidence that her husband is a murderer. But nothing on this island is quite as it seems, and only when these women come together can they discover the whole story about the men in their lives.

Downloaded this book after seeing it promoted in a Book Club in Gungahlin, Canberra. So many twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat the whole way through the book. Believable characters that you can relate to and feel empathy for. Soothing narration that moves the story forward. Will definitely listen to this again!

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo introduced us to Scandi noir. Now, welcome to Alexander McCall Smith's world of Scandi blanc... Ulf Varg works in Malmo's Department of Sensitive Crimes. Like all Scandinavian detectives he has his issues. In his case these include his unresolved feelings for his colleague, Anna; his impatience over the seeming incompetence of his irritating colleague Blomquist; and his concerns for the health of his hearing-impaired dog, Marten, the only dog in Sweden (and possibly all Scandinavia) who is able to lip-read (in Swedish).

This looks like another wonderful series by Alexander McCall Smith. Some great characters of course and another setting with all the intriguing language we’ve come to expect from this author. I can’t wait for the next one. Great narration that was at the right pace and enough variation in voices to make all the characters appear to be in the room with you.

Story
Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn't exist. After all, life isn't a scene from the movies, is it? But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man whom she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there's a moment of pure magic...and then her bus drives away. Laurie thinks she'll never see the boy from the bus again. But at their Christmas party a year later, her best friend, Sarah, introduces her to the new love of her life. Who is, of course, the boy from the bus.

Story
In this definitive biography, renowned Bible scholar, Anglican bishop, and best-selling author N. T. Wright offers a radical look at the apostle Paul, illuminating the humanity and remarkable achievements of this intellectual who invented Christian theology - transforming a faith and changing the world. For centuries, Paul, the apostle who "saw the light on the Road to Damascus" and made a miraculous conversion from zealous Pharisee persecutor to devoted follower of Christ, has been one of the church's most widely cited saints.

What a wonderful life you’ve led Sir Tony Robinson! It was really interesting to hear how you embarked on your acting career and kept at it even with the many setbacks you encountered. I had no idea you were so involved politically and a little ironic that I finished the book this morning on my way to work and then heard that you had resigned from the Labour Party 3 days ago after 45 years!!! Your close encounters with Altzheimers was particularly moving and I will definitely be looking for the film about your mother’s experiences. I highly recommend this book as an informative, entertaining and brilliantly performed life story.

Story
Young Lobbi was preparing to leave his childhood home, his autistic brother, his octogenarian father, and the familiar landscape of mossy lava fields for an unknown future. Soon before his departure, he received an awful phone call: His mother was in a car accident. She used her dying words to offer calm advice to her son, urging him to continue their shared work in the greenhouse tending to the rare Rosa candida. Prior to his mother’s death, in that very same greenhouse, Lobbi made love to Anna, a friend of a friend, and just as he readies his departure he learns that in their brief night together they conceived a child.

Very unusual narrative but believable characters. A coming of age story with insights into what defines a family and love. I was a little disappointed in the ending as I felt the story was cut short and would hope there’s a follow up novel to satisfy my curiosityy. Highly recommended for an indulgent weekend read and brilliant as an audiobook for a long journey.

A very unusual book with characters that are flawed, totally endearing and believable. Unlike anything I’ve read before so it’s difficult to categorize! A loveable character for the lead who has a trusting, accepting view of the world and what it comprises, he is fiercly loyal to his friends and dysfunctional family and somehow manages to overcome seemingly insurmountable problems to a satisfying conclusion. I highly recommend this book and am about to hear it again to pick up on some of the twists and turns I missed!

What a brilliant book! It has so much insight into politicians.....it should definitely be a mandatory book for everyone who enters politics. It was thoroughly enjoyed by our 8 and 10 year old Canberrans and their grandfather insisted on listening to the end after they’d gone to sleep. I took great delight in stopping at cliffhangar end of chapters so they then requested to go to bed early so they could listen to more!!! Now what will we download next?
