The magnificent ship is already boiling over with a mutinous plot that is just about to break into the open when, just off the coast of Western Australia, it strikes an unseen reef in the middle of the night. What did you like best about this story?

As a visitor to NYC twice over the past decade, I am keen to get back there again and explore more of what that amazing city has to offer. I found this book great in a number of ways - one it provides me with an interesting history of Manhattan; and two it is written in such a way that I can use it as a Walking Tour guide.

I've set bookmarks at all the places I would really love to see on my next visit (and judging by the number of bookmarks it will need to be an extended trip) - and to know about the history of those places will make the experience even better.

I'm very happy to have purchased this book and would recommend it to anyone wanting to find out more about NYC.

A Short History of Nearly Everything is Bill Bryson's quest to understand everything that has happened from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization. He takes subjects that normally bore the pants off most of us, like geology, chemistry, and particle physics, and aims to render them comprehensible to people who have never thought they could be interested in science. In the company of some extraordinary scientists, Bill Bryson reveals the world in a way most of us have never seen it before.

Bill Bryson has an incredible talent for researching very complex topics and then converting them into something the average person can understand. I must say I am pleased to have listened to this book as opposed to reading it (I fear I may not have made it to the end). Well done Mr Bryson. The narrator on the other hand did a fairly good job, but still fell down on the pronunciation of some words ... but at least his performance was way better than it was in Down Under.

Most of us believe that we will finally feel satisfied and content with our lives when we get the good news we have been waiting for, find a healthy relationship, or achieve one of our personal goals. However, this rarely happens. Good fortune is often followed by negative emotions that overtake us and result in destructive behaviors.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I'm an Anthony Robbins fan having quite a few of his CDs, but this book .... arrgghhh, it really didn't strike a cord with me. For me the message of "awaken the giant within", didn't come out.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Awaken the Giant Within?

I've got to ask, what was the deal with that woman coming in, what seemed like every five minutes, with quotes??? Definitely the most annoying part of the book!!! To me, if you had cut her out, the book would have either been half the time OR the author could have used the extra time to actually get his message out.

Any additional comments?

One of the most disappointing books I've listened to. My initial reaction is "I want my money back".

What a great book. I can't believe that even though I have known about it for many decades, it has taken me this long to purchase it. The messages that Dale Carnegie has are exactly those needed to win friends and influence people. I'm already putting some of his key messages into action. Andrew MacMillan was a fantastic narrator.

Bill Bryson is definitely a gifted story teller. It was such a shame he wasn't the narrator as I feel Roberts didn't do the book justice. As an Australian I cringed at his poor Aussie accent and his inability to correctly pronounce many words but none more so than Uluru. Of course I'll buy more of Bryson's books, but not the audible version (especially if William Roberts is the narrator).
