I read a lot, and many books are ho hum, but this book by Robert Harris is one of the best. It could be called alternative history, but he sets his work firmly in an historical background. Harris’s descriptive portions are accomplished with minimal wordiness. Dinginess, wet cold, dirt, tension, underlying conflict are all here.

Wonderful read.

Robert Harris is my favourite author. He immerses his stories authentically in their time and makes history believable and understandable. I especially like the way he caught the attitudes of the men who lead the army; their ignorance and prejudices. The same weaknesses are very clear in our current political situation. Are we always to be in the clutches of these decision makers of our world?

Great listen, but confusing

The voices of the two main characters were read by the same person in the same tone. Several times it was difficult to discern which was which. Otherwise I loved this book. Thank you. I gave performance only 4 stars but I think the problem was production.

Thoroughly enjoyable history lesson. I would love to see a further volume about the rise of the religious right in America contrasted with the rise of religious skepticism. Parallel with the rise of the religious right in Muslim Middle East.

No redeeming feature.

I kept waiting for a twist at the end to resolve this depressing book. No good twist, it just rumbled on to it’s sad conclusion. Characters re ll horrible, manipulative and predictable.
