I enjoyed this book and found the glimpses of life during the war very realistic . The storyline was really good and I enjoyed how the women stuck by each other. The narration was excellent.

As usual, a good plot.

I really enjoy The Detective Lavender Mysteries as the stories hold my interest right to the end. It's especially interesting to think the stories are based on a true life Inspector Lavender and his cases. My only negative point is that the harsh male voices the narrator uses are hard to listen to , otherwise it's very authentic.

Unsatisfying ending.

Storyline was slow without much happening. The ending was very unsatisfying. Awful to think of a mute 14 year old sailing out to the unknown. She can't speak, has no money or clothes. How would she survive? The horrible rape didn't seem to add anything to the storyline except to emphasize how alone the girl is. I had hoped for a good ending for her, finding her voice, education and Grace with her privileged wealthy life could have taken her in. Surely Grace would have married the man she loved instead of choosing to stay where her mentally ill father was. He was well cared for in the home and didn't even recognize Grace.

Depressing

It was hard for me to continue reading after so much hate shown by the Parson, his daughter and villagers. It was depressing but I continued reading to see how it would end. The narrator did a good job with the different characters' voices although I find the constant upward inflection at the end a bit annoying.

Slow plot.

I like the main characters and their rapport, but the plot was a bit far fetched and involved and her closing summary was way too long.
