At Cold Mountain Penitentiary, along the lonely stretch of cells known as the Green Mile, killers such as "Billy the Kid" Wharton and the possessed Eduard Delacroix await death strapped in "Old Sparky". Guards as decent as Paul Edgecombe and as sadistic as Percy Wetmore watch over them.

Excellent story with lovely characters, lots of nuance and feeling and the narrator has a wonderful pace and subtley of tone. Thoroughly enjoyed it despite having seen the movie and hence knowing most of the twists.

Every new project (or job, or hobby, or company) starts out exciting and fun. Then it gets harder and less fun, until it hits a low point: really hard, and not much fun at all. And then you find yourself asking if the goal is even worth the hassle. Maybe you're in a Dip: a temporary setback that you will overcome if you keep pushing. But maybe it's really a Cul-de-Sac, which will never get better, no matter how hard you try.

Any additional comments?

The book had a good central thesis. Time is precious and thus when you choose to put your work and effort into something learn to stick with it and become the best or quit before you waist your time. But don't do as most do and give it a shake but realise it's not for you, or just think it's too hard. The book had some additional valid points regarding dead ends (referring to them as a coldesac) in saying why should you invest the same amount of effort but with no possible upward trajectory.

But in the end this book's main flaw resides in it's length. The book is too long to present a simple yet interesting essay on how one should pursue a career/passion/hobby/etc. And too short to go into proper depth regarding the dip and the general theory applied to specific situations, and a less simplistic view of the workforce.
