An absolute treasure

This book is an absolute treasure. As one who spent 45 years identifying as a Protestant it was only in 2018 that I converted to the Catholic faith. As a Protestant ‘communion’ was little more than a symbolic act. In fact over the years I witnessed it go from a weekly occurrence during the church service to monthly. Towards the end of my time in a charismatic church the wine became orange juice served in a sealed container and the bread was no more than a dry cracker in the same plastic container. It was a hurried event squeezed in between the worship and the weekly news. It had little meaning for me, or I imagine, the majority of the congregation. After nine months of RCIA I had a slightly better understanding of the Eucharist but there was still something not quite right. I had read many stories of the Saints and how much of their strength came from the Eucharist. I wanted what they had! So I prayed and asked God to show me the Eucharist as he sees it. He led me to this book and to be honest I feel overwhelmed, not with frustration but with pure love and thankfulness. I need to listen to it again and then probably again and again because there are so many facets to this book. It is like a diamond. A true gem.

My priest recommended Henry's writing. I looked at few of his titles and decided on this book in order to get to know the man behind the words. I am so glad that I did. Every letter shared contains little nuggets of wisdom. The book is a precious treasure trove of faith, hope and love. I feel as though I am a better person for having taken a glimpse in to the life of this wonderful man. Thank You Henri.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I can't begin to tell you how much I loved this book by Father Richard Rohr. I listened to it once then decided that I needed to listen to it again and write notes. I did that then decided to listen to it a third.....and a fourth time! There are so many hidden gems that I didn't want to miss one of them. I will probably listen to it again too. You can never have too much of a good thing in your life!

What did you like best about this story?

So many hidden gems.

What does Richard Rohr bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

It is like listening to a wise but gentle teacher. His warmth is wrapped up in to the words of the story and his real life examples magnify it.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Life Changer.

I just finished listening to this audible book but am going to go back and listen again, and then probably again.............There are so many gold nuggets in this story that I don't want to miss one. It isn't a book that you listen to once and put away. It is something that I feel needs to be absorbed completely and then meditated on. Well that is my thought anyway. I really really loved it.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I have read most of the books by Father Thomas Keating on centering prayer and thoroughly enjoyed them. This book has confused me and left me feeling slightly intimidated. Too many big words and over complicated. If I ever hear the word 'nondual' again it will be too soon.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment, confusion.

Any additional comments?

Definitely not for beginners. Perhaps when I have been practicing centering prayer for a longer time I may re visit it.

Since putting the principles laid out in this amazing book in to my own life I have been experienced tremendous release from crippling anxiety. Although not totally free (at this stage) I can see light at the end of the tunnel. Honestly, this teaching is better than antidepressants. They just left me feeling like a zombie with no emotions. I can't believe how good I am feeling. The mind is so powerful.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. . I found that the author covered the subject of Christian Mysticism very well. Lots of wonderful examples and advise.
I am glad that I did not read the other reviews here before buying this book. A lot of people said that they did not like the narrator of the Audible. If I had read that before buying it would have been a huge distraction for me. I honestly found the narrator very good. His voice is quite calming and I think it enhanced the book. But everyone is different I guess and not everyone will agree.
