So much room for improvement

This book was such a let down that I stopped listening after a few hours. I bought the book on special and still returning it. There are major flaws in the character design as well, the main character is meant to be a health care professional but comes across as completely thick and needing the simplest things repeated to him. The voice actor uses the same voice/tone/speech pattern for all male characters, dry and monotonous.

I tried to enjoy the book, so far as listening to 14 hours before giving up. I'm surprised that the publisher didn't cut out 5-8 hours of the content so there was some pace to the story. Additionally, for a book about vikings and considering the blerb provided, you'd expect there to be at least some combat, instead the story focuses on the village priestess and her daily life, not the vikings at all. Bought the book on sale for $4 and happy to return it.

The life of a pleb

The story is focused on the life of an everyday American who doesn't realise he is a pleb, he believes he is important but is mediocre in every sense. His life has no impact on the world, the universe or the war campaign and yet he still believes that he knows better than those around him.

There are very few books in this genre which have such a complete story and background, starting when the main character is so young and yet keeping you engaged the whole time. Like all books, there is a plot device which the characters use to get themselves out of trouble, yet it isn't over used, is realistic and isn't over powered; the story isn't win win win, the characters sometimes fail so you never truly know what the outcome will be.

I love the genre and the voice actor, but there was no character progression. The book is a series of minor inconveniences for the main character all solved using the same plot device, the character didn't experience any type of hardship nor grew from the experiences

I found the book to be very slow to start and very slow to finish. Glad I bought it on sale.

I really tried to listen to this book, twice in fact but couldn't justify spending more time listening to it. The characters whinge and just seem super self absorbed and annoying. 2.5 hours in and still nothing of note has happened in the story. I also find it annoying when authors change the name of common things for absolutely no value, why call it a squatery rather than toilet? The name for other locations such as the kitchen is still called the kitchen.

I tried and wanted to get into this book but just couldn't, the writing style seems to be for a younger audience (I expect mid-teens) and the character's manner is inconsistent. I gave up half way through, there is a lot going on in the story but very little progression.

Only lasted ~3 hours, the story seems pointless. Found it hard to get into and just couldn't care enough to keep listening.
