A brutal triple murder in a remote Scottish farming community in 1869 leads to the arrest of 17-year-old Roderick Macrae. There is no question that Macrae committed this terrible act. What would lead such a shy and intelligent boy down this bloody path? Presented as a collection of documents, His Bloody Project opens with a series of police statements taken from the villagers, which offer conflicting impressions, throwing Macrae's motive and his sanity into question.

This unusual book is an interesting true story brought to life through excellent prose and faultless narration, but it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, even if they like tales of murderous crime. I found the details of rural life in the Scottish highlands fascinating but a little tedious, the characters beautifully drawn, but the narrator not quite able to make them seem quite alive, I couldn’t quite feel empathy for them. This is an award winning book and I can see why (though Wolf Hall towers above it for me), but it’s still not my cup of tea.

I tried, really tried, but I just could not keep listening to this narration. I had enjoyed to movie and really wanted to 'read' the unabridged novel, but the woman's voice is unbearable, at least to my non-American ear :(
