Appallingly bad ending! OMG!
Reviewed: 02-10-2020
Positives, the craft on the page was good. And it had a very good reader. And for a while the book reminded of the excellent ‘The Reincarnation of Peter Proud’. But the ending? OMG how bad was that?! It totally ruined the book. Do yourself a favour and avoid this, unless you’re a fan of shockingly bad endings that insult your intelligence. In which case, have at it! But don’t say you weren’t warned!

Story
In Daevabad, where djinn can summon flames with a snap of their fingers, where rivers run deep with ancient magic, and blood can be as dangerous as any spell, a clever con artist from Cairo will alter the fate of a kingdom. Nahri’s life changed forever when she accidentally summoned Dara, a formidable, mysterious djinn, during one of her schemes. Thrust into the dazzling royal court of Daevabad, she needed all of her grifter instincts to survive. Now, as Nahri embraces her heritage and her power, she must forge a new path.

Great sequel. Brilliantly read. But narrative needed more of Dara. A lot more. It’s like writing an X-Men novel and Wolverine is only in it every 50 pages. He’s the real lead. Make no mistake. It’s Dara’s story we really care about. When you leave out the best character it waters down the narrative.

Really enjoyed this one. Great story well told by the writer and brilliantly read. The occasional clunky narrative gear-change aside, it was great from start to finish. Was about to move on straight away to book 2 in the series but didn't as I discovered it has a different reader. Like, WTF? Continuity people, it's not rocket science!

Riffing on King's IT - Not Original But Good
Reviewed: 18-12-2017
Any additional comments?
Dan Simmons obviously has a thing for King's sepia coloured view of small-town America in the 1960s. A place where all is good and wholesome and right. At least until the evil rises and bad things happen to good people. If you've read King's IT you'll know where this story is going early on. As in a very real sense, this is an IT 'rip-off'. Which is a good thing and a bad thing, depending on your point of view. I guess what I'm saying is, this isn't the most original thing you're ever going to read. But don't be put off by that. Dan Simmons is a good writer, and the characters in this are well drawn. And I'd have no problem reading another Dan Simmons book somewhere down the line.Dan John Miller's read was solid. Not enough variation on individual character voices, etc for my liking. But again, it was nothing that put me off finishing the audio-book.

Story
To the children, the town was their whole world. To the adults, knowing better, Derry, Maine, was just their hometown: familiar, well ordered for the most part. A good place to live. It was the children who saw - and felt - what made Derry so horribly different. In the storm drains, in the sewers, IT lurked, taking on the shape of every nightmare, each one's deepest dread. Sometimes IT reached up, seizing, tearing, killing....

This book, even as an audio book, is a marathon of concentration. And it takes no shortage of commitment to finish it. But the narrative is meaty, the prose exceptional and the spoken word performance so breathtakingly good, that finishing it becomes its own giddy, wonderful reward.

Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.
