It is a cliché but this book is a must read. it really opened my eyes to an alternative narrative of our species. I have been a reader of books like Sapiens, collapse, etc. this book puts an alternative view that is well worth considering

This was a great book about the American experience of the pandemic and also the evolution of the science and practice of medicine from the late 19th century through to the mid 20th century. the book oscillate well between the horror on the ground, to the efforts of those trying to stop the onslaught. It uses the language of the time and embeds many quotes giving the reader a real feel for the people that are the subject of the text

The events and associated points made in the book are quite balanced, and the interpretation quite interesting, however it could have been done with 40% less words

The book was a little slow to start with the pre Bowerman story taking a while. it was well read but a pity the narator can't say fractions of a second correctly. I.e. 3:53.43 he would read the .43 as "point forty three" which is just plain wrong and very annoying where so many times are read out.

Being a mechanical engineer this book took me back through the great history of my profession and then onwards and upwards to the fantastic heights we have achieved today. The author, together with his accent and turn of phrase took me into the 19th century workshops quite literally. it really brought life to what is already a great history, far better than simply reading it on the page.

Good book, but poor start.

Stay with it. The apologetic start and first pilot is not that good. it gets a lot better. overall is a great book.
