A new reading star has appeared. Andy Serkis brought The Hobbit to life amazingly well.

Looking for a series to 'really get stuck into' I found this Gregg Hurwitz novel, number 1 in the series. Evan Smoak has some similarities with Jack Reacher.. he helps people who are in trouble.. but Evan lives in a fortress and has loads of 'things', whereas Jack doesn't. Within a couple of chapters I was interested in his life and his routines.. he's a lonely kind of guy, meditates and lives by strong codes. Anyway, I finished the book within three days and can recommend it as a fast moving story that clearly has loads of places to go. Book 2 is now on my list. The reader, Scott Brick, has really improved lately. He used to drone on and on with not much variation in his voice and as a non-American, I will often choose a book because it doesn't have an American reader. ( Apart from the fabulous George Guidall of course. ). However, in Orphan X Brick's reading is very good.

The writer sounds new and wooden.. not the slick style of eg Berenson. But if he is a beginner then he had, imho, potential and i will try another one. Very American.. the characature of a Brit and use of words like 'bloke' .. oh dear. Anyway, the narrator also needs to get out a bit - (out of the USA) . mispronunciation of eg. Citroën and Kazaks.. started to grate. But the story clips along and i did finish it so a promising start to a new series. Fingers crossed for book 2.

When i need to be thoroughly entertained i can always rely on a Walt Longmire story. i may be English and never met a cowboy but the humour in these stories transcends all that. George Guidall is the best narrator I have ever come across.

I remember liking the Russia House film and although some parts of the plot are left unclear - nevertheless there was a sense of full circle.. 'hero's journey' about it. But the book has been hard to stick with. Le Carre can write descriptive prose brilliantly but this one rambles. He sounds depressed by the whole long pressure from the usa; as though the details are so close to reality and he is disgusted by it all. There is a lovely description of katya's list of swaps and barters ... and Barley's jazz .. but on the whole i think I'd recommend the film as a more satisfying experience.

Great narration. That kept me going through a couple of slow bits. I will be reading another Jo Nesbo soon.

This was my second read/listen. I have actually listened to all my Gabriel Allon books more than once . The stories are complex and well descibed. George Guidell is a master reader.. I often choose books just because he has read them. The Other Woman filled in some of the details about the Cambridge Five I didnt know. Heartily recommend all the Silva books and this one lived up to the author's reputation. .

The story is gripping, detailed, visually splendid and worthy of a long read. The narration irritated me eventually. There doesnt need to be several people reading it. Just hire one of the best narrators for this classic. Anyway, seen the various movies and series and i can honestly say that the book adds to.those. People who say they didnt need to read the book because they saw the movie.. are clearly deranged- or have never read a trully satisfying book in hard copy.

i read this book first in the 80s and loved it. I still do. George Guidall is such an amazing narrator. If you havent found him you are in for a huge treat. The story is the first time i have encountered the personification of Death . Piers Anthony was a brilliant writer and should be much more celebrated than he is.
