Story
Welcome to the world of the Secret Barrister. These are the stories of life inside the courtroom. They are sometimes funny, often moving and ultimately life-changing. How can you defend a child abuser you suspect to be guilty? What do you say to someone sentenced to ten years whom you believe to be innocent? What is the law, and why do we need it? And why do they wear those stupid wigs?

As a lawyer (although not in the UK, but in another Commonwealth jurisdiction), this rings true. Gives a "warts and all" assessment of what it can be to become a party (victim) to a battle within our legal sytem and how unjust it can be.

A very detailed history of DDay. Definately one of the best histories that I've read.

Some parts are reasonably good but it lacks the detail of the battles that other books in the genre contain. Definately not a book I would read twice.

Story
A vast canvas of camps, prisons, transit centres and secret police, of informers and spies and interrogators but also of everyday heroism, The Gulag Archipelago is Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's grand masterwork. Based on the testimony of some 200 survivors, and on the recollection of Solzhenitsyn's own 11 years in labour camps and exile, it chronicles the story of those at the heart of the Soviet Union who opposed Stalin, and for whom the key to survival lay not in hope but in despair.

This should be made compulsory reading for university students who consider advocating for socialism. It is not a happy and uplifting read, but it is probably the most moving book I have read in long time.

I have seen a number of his YouTube videos (which I find very good) so maybe my expectations were too high going in but this book didn't really keep me enthralled. it is pretty good but not great. I still finished it but can't imagine listening to it a second time.
