Story
A thousand years ago evil came to the land and has ruled with an iron hand ever since. The sun shines fitfully under clouds of ash that float down endlessly from the constant eruption of volcanoes. A dark lord rules through the aristocratic families, and ordinary folk are condemned to lives in servitude, sold as goods, labouring in the ash fields. But now a troublemaker has arrived, and there is rumour of revolt.

Exciting, gut wrenching, heart-warming, maybe a little too nice to the main characters in the end, but after everything they went through a fairy tale ending was nice to see.

Story
The penultimate volume of the mighty Riftwar Cycle. War rages in Midkemia but behind the chaos there is disquieting evidence of dark forces at work. Jim Dasher’s usually infallible intelligence network has been cleverly dismantled; nowhere is safe. He feels that the world is coming apart at the seams and is helpless to protect his nation. Quiet palace coups are underway in Roldem and Rillanon; and King Gregory of the Isles has yet to produce an heir.

Once again Raymond's books amaze and entertain. A real shame the narrator was changed and that they didn't listen to a previous reading so as to have the same pronunciation of characters and places. That said they didnt do a bad job it was just jarring after listening to Peter Joyce for over 100hours for the previous books.
