At the time of his death, Patrick O'Brian was halfway through a novel that continued the famous and much-loved Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin series. The chapters left off with a moment of almost perfect felicity: Jack has seen his illegitimate son ably discharging important duties, Sophie and his daughters are with him, Stephen has a new love, and Jack, at last, is flying a rear-admiral's flag aboard a ship of the line.

Had the makings of a great story but ended far too soon. The naval information up front was cool, especially for those of us who have read or heard the previous 20 books.
In fact you'd feel a little cheated paying full price for a book 1/4 the size of the others if you hadn't already read or heard the previous 20 books. (Even So, full price is a bit rough.)

A pretty good read. Some inconsistencies in the story that are hard to ignore. Also the story pace plods along from time to time.

Brandon Sanderson shows his genius again and again. What wonders he consistently creates within his cosmere.

In the 1940s did people realise that Tolkien's work was going to change the fiction writing world forever? I think this is what we are seeing Brandon Sanderson doing to fantasy fiction in our time.

From the best-selling author who completed Robert Jordan's epic Wheel of Time series comes a new original creation that matches anything else in modern fantasy for epic scope, thrilling imagination, superb characters and sheer addictiveness. Return to a planet swept by apocalyptic storms, a world tipping into war as aristocratic families move to control the shard blades and shard plates, ancient artefacts from a past civilisation that can win wars.

A great idea, but the story was completely linear and the hero was not believable from beginning to end!

In 15 years he gains about 3 lifetimes of mastery; a broken leg and ribs don't hinder combat against dozens of trained assassins; and you can't deflect a crossbow bolt by quickly throwing a knife at it or catching it. Ridiculous!

I can't read on, because there's no challenge ahead, and therefore no interest. Really disappointing...
