Story
A masterpiece from the Orange Prize-winning, New York Times number one best-selling author of Commonwealth and Bel Canto: a story of love, family, sacrifice and the power of place. Lose yourself in the story of a lifetime – the unforgettable Sunday Times best seller. A story of two siblings, their childhood home and a past that they can’t let go. Like swallows, like salmon, we were the helpless captives of our migratory patterns.

A house that shaped lives.
Reviewed: 14-02-2021
Tom Hanks does such a great job of narrating this story. It was like hanging out with Tom and getting into a great story about a family history. I imagined the house and all the characters. It was very real in terms of the relationships and the times of regret letting go and redemption. Yet it was also with elements of mystery and magic because of the house and all its history gave such depth to the story. Traversing almost 6 decades through the characters it was a journey through American social history as well. Very good.

Story
Eddie Jaku always considered himself a German first, a Jew second. He was proud of his country. But all of that changed in November 1938, when he was beaten, arrested and taken to a concentration camp. Over the next seven years, Eddie faced unimaginable horrors every day, first in Buchenwald, then in Auschwitz, then on a Nazi death march. He lost family, friends, his country.

I am very thankful to Eddie for sharing his story. This is an important story that so many people need to hear. We must remember those who lost their lives and work everyday to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again. A story of hope and potential. One of transcendence. One of love. One of transformation. We have so much to learn from Eddie. A friend of us all. xxx

Magical retellings of four classic fairy tales.

"Rumpelstiltskin", read by Stephen Mangan: A beautiful miller's daughter is locked away by the King and told she will never see her family again unless she spins straw into gold. "The Snow Queen", read by Stephen Mangan: Sebastian and Anna are best friends who do everything together. "The Little Match Girl", read by Tamsin Greig: It is bitterly cold, and the Little Match Girl is walking the icy streets in bare feet, trying to sell just one box of matches.

As a writer myself I enjoyed this story. very long lots of characters and twists but generally a good story for relaxing and listening to in your spare time. The narrator made it come alive. .. she is fantastic. I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much with out her performance and all the accents.

Fascinating to learn about this story. Very well put together . An insight into the cold war through the context of one family's experience and exploration of their own father's secret life. Answers some questions but also leaves you wanting to know more and learn more about tit for tat under cover workings of the CIA and the KGB since the 1950s and how this has influenced political moves in the middle east since.

Story
Anne Glenconner reveals the real events behind The Crown as well as her own life of drama, tragedy and courage, with the wonderful wit and extraordinary resilience which define her. Anne Glenconner has been close to the Royal Family since childhood. Eldest child of the 5th Earl of Leicester, she was, as a daughter, described as 'the greatest disappointment' by her family as she was unable to inherit. Her childhood home, Holkham Hall, is one of the grandest estates in England. Bordering Sandringham, the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret were frequent playmates.
