Story
In We Can't Say We Didn't Know, Sophie tells the human stories of devastation and hope behind the headlines – of children, families and refugees, of valiant doctors, steadfast dissidents and Saudi women seeking asylum. These innocent civilians bear the brunt of the lawlessness of the current age of impunity, where war crimes go unpunished and human rights are abused. Many risk everything they know to stand up for what they believe in and to be on the right side of history and their courage is extraordinary and inspiring.

Impressive story but an over the top reader
Reviewed: 13-08-2020
This was an uncomfortable book to listen to, the story is spectacular but the speaker reads it like an over the top children’s book.
I would have preferred to choose my own emotions while listening.
It was exhausting to listen to.

Story
In 1941, the first Neumann family member was taken by the Nazis, arrested in German-occupied Czechoslovakia for bathing in a stretch of river forbidden to Jews. He was transported to Auschwitz. Eighteen days later his prisoner number was entered into the morgue book. Of 34 Neumann family members, 25 were murdered by the Nazis. One of the survivors was Hans Neumann, who, to escape the German death net, travelled to Berlin and hid in plain sight under the Gestapo’s eyes.

Yes I have read many books from Holocaust, and this one held me captive as it skilfully unravelled. The reader was superb in her telling of this truly intriguing story. Thank you Ariana for telling this story.

Story
What colour is cancer? Why do some people appear to have made miraculous recoveries? How can you tell when someone is in the final hours of their life? How can we ensure our most vulnerable are treated with the dignity they deserve? In this unprecedented memoir, a palliative medicine pioneer explores the biggest taboo in our society and the only certainty we all share: death. Kathryn Mannix immortalises the thousands of men and women she has seen off.
