Story
Motherless and irrepressibly curious, Esme spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, a garden shed in Oxford where her father and a team of lexicographers are gathering words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day, she sees a slip containing the word bondmaid flutter to the floor unclaimed. Esme begins to collect other words from the Scriptorium that are misplaced, discarded or have been neglected by the dictionary men.

Mispronunciation

Although the narrator was clear and easy to understand I found it irritating that a number of place names, surnames and general words were mispronounced. A simple check would have been worthwhile - otherwise the narrator was excellent.

Story
Explorer, naturalist and president of Britain's Royal Society, Sir Joseph Banks was a larger-than-life character best known for his promotion of science. In 1768 Banks joined Captain James Cook's expedition to the South Pacific. The 30,000 specimens he brought back generated enormous interest, as did the sometimes racy written account of the journey, which chronicled his frequent amorous exploits.

Cringemaking
Reviewed: 11-01-2021
The story of Banks has been well researched and I enjoyed learning about his life and achievements. Whilst the narrator was clear with his annunciation, his pronunciation of many names of towns, surnames and words in general was somewhat lacking and cringemaking and it is disappointing that this wasn’t adequately checked during the process of recording.
