Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

I'm loving this series! It's well written, easy to listen to and the narration is brilliant!
I love all of the characters and there's never a dull moment so far in this series. There is a good amount of suspense and also light hearted moments. The characters solutions to problems are smart and intricate which makes me appreciate the effort the author has put into the storyline. The love... triangle is clever and not unbelievable, I cant wait to find out what happens with that!

Hilketa is a frenetic and violent pastime where players attack each other with swords and hammers. The main goal of the game: obtain your opponent's head and carry it through the goalposts. With flesh and bone bodies, a sport like this would be impossible. But all the players are "threeps", robot-like bodies controlled by people with Haden's Syndrome, so anything goes. No one gets hurt, but the brutality is real, and the crowds love it. Until a star athlete drops dead on the playing field.

Spoilers alert:
I love the idea of these books but they have been executed so badly... When Theron is infected with the decay and Miera goes to get the keys from him and she can see he has no weapons on him so she relaxes a little, I was yelling "He has magic from the decay you stupid girl!" and then he uses his magic to fight her and she's surprised. Like come on... seriously...?!
I listened to the whole series because the author has put a lot of thought into creating this world with 8 kingdoms which I really enjoyed learning about but I am also so glad I have finished them and can get onto better books now. (sorry)

i struggled with this one. for such a strong minded, stubborn girl, the main character annoyingly melts at the sight of boys. its so frustrating! she grew up with the prince so i would think she would see him as more of a brother... the ending got better and I'll give the 2nd book a go but i didn't feel like this book was written very well. but give it a go for yourself! you might like it!
