It’s a war filled with larger than life characters. There will be sledging, accusations of cheating, theft and performance enhancing drugs. And allegations that Australia was cheated out of a Guinness World Record. In the process of charting the scandal-plagued race to breed the world’s hottest chilli, the audio documentary lifts the lid on the subculture of ‘Chilli-heads’, hardcore chilli fans spread across the globe who compete in chilli eating and breeding competitions.

Really enjoyed this...especially the exploration of the psychology behind why chilli-heads are doing what they are doing. Interesting reflection on Marc’s own food demons. Definitely recommend!

What an exquisite novel. Written with so much humour and humanity. I just adored the characters. Beautifully written and stunningly narrated. My only disappointment was that the book had to finish. For me, this is the book of the year (if not longer!)

A story of desperation, resolution and small-town prejudice played out against the blistering extremes of life on the land. Amid the worst drought to ravage Australia in a century, a farmer turns his gun on his family and then himself. As questions mount and suspicion casts a long shadow over the parched town, specialist investigator Aaron Falk is forced to confront the community that rejected him 20 years earlier.

What made the experience of listening to The Dry the most enjoyable?

The narrator was fantastic! Absolutely captured what I saw to be the essence of the book. The story was fabulously written...loved the crescendo to the finish. Highly recommend!

With her own periods of depression and now a Masters from Oxford in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy to draw from, she explains how our busy, chattering, self-critical thoughts drive us to anxiety and stress. If we are to break the cycle, we need to understand how our brains work, rewire our thinking and find calm in a frenetic world.
