Story is fine. Narration is painful.

I just don’t understand why so many people seem to like this book. Story is fine but not incredible, character development is pretty good but I didn’t actually ‘like’ any of the characters. I found some descriptions, especially reactions and emotions cringey. Narration is painful - I often find Australian narration off putting but this was also overacted too.

This book is special. It is so rich in taking you into the character’s worlds of craftsmanship, sound, shape, music, love, loss and (most of all) friendship. Full of metaphors. Light but deep. You’ll feel sad it’s over.

Tom Hanks: please narrate more books. Potential readers looking for a review: yeah it’s was a good book, didn’t love it but a good solid read. Characters are great.

A light, enjoyable read. Teen protagonists, immersive adventure, fun 80s throwbacks, and some softly explored themes of gender/race/socio-economic disparity. Great-fit narrator.

A really good read. A modern adventure with lord of the flies undertones. I enjoyed the style of Garland’s writing.

I didn’t know anything about this book besides it being a classic and about war. It might be best to go into it with only this level of knowledge because any plot explanation could put you off. It’s quirky, odd, dry in humour, non-linear in timeline and a slow burn. Let go of trying to make sense of it and you’ll end up loving it.

A refreshing read that’s not your standard mystery/love story. Setting is unique and very immersive. Some really lovely descriptions and the ecological commentary through out is a bonus. I found the performance a little grating at times.

Nice romance book, perfect for a holiday read. Simple but endearing characters. Cool setting but wish they explored it a little more. Mild on the cringe (quite a feat for this genre).

You want a pulpy romance, this will get you most of the way there. Moments of cringe. Still, it was okay.

Good story and characters but what really sets this book apart is the whole concept of binding and the world this creates - good and bad. I’ll not stop thinking about this for some time.
