Campbell Parkes may be an idiot but he still has his own radio show, broadcast every day at midnight to a dwindling audience. His long-suffering producer Michelle longs to pursue real journalism but instead must listen to Campbell's on-air rants about expensive cinema tickets and reusable coffee cups every night. When an opportunity to grab the station's hallowed breakfast slot develops, it's time to raise their game and make the biggest splash possible - no matter how outrageous. It's a win-win situation: supporters tune in to cheer you on, and detractors tune in just to hate you.

In this gripping account, Peter Hartcher shows how Beijing stepped up its campaign for influence, over hearts and minds, mineral and agricultural resources, media outlets and sea lanes. Reactions have included panic, xenophobia and all-the-way-with-the-USA - but the challenge now is to think hard about the national interest and respond with wisdom to a changed world. This urgent, authoritative essay blends reporting and analysis, and covers the local scene as well as the larger geopolitical picture.

At the turn of the millennium, Western Sydney was a terrifying gangland. At the heart of the frenzy was the Darwiche-Razzak family conflict – a Romeo-and-Juliet style tragedy complicated by honour codes, politics and drive-by shootings. Journalist Mahmood Fazal draws on his own experiences as a gang member to tell the inside story of Sydney’s Lebanese gang wars, to pinpoint why young Muslims just like him commit their lives to violence.

So much more than a gangster story
Reviewed: 17-10-2019
I'm not really much of a fan of 'gangster stories' but this podcast is so much more than that. It's about family, a city divided, migrants adapting to a new world and the context of religious belief. Glad I gave it a shot!

Unexpected gem

I didn't really know what an audio drama was but I'm glad I gave this a go. First episode took a bit to get into but then I was gripped until the end - surprised myself at how quickly I got through it but couldn't stop listening!
The voice actors were fantastic and the plot felt like a thriller movie, I'm getting my friends on to it now :)

Lu and her friends are all hitting 50 and have no intention of learning to knit. Feisty and fabulous, this foursome is determined to grow old disgracefully. Join them on their journey across the desert and across the years to their home town and a school reunion, in this audio drama from the international best-selling author of The Bride Stripped Bare. As for Lu - recently divorced, living with three demanding kids, always awaiting promotion at work - well Lu really believes she’s reached the age of invisibility. Love must be over for her. The Australian outback road trip feels a bit like Priscilla Queen of The Desert (but with 50yo women). The cast was really solid and the chemistry between the voice actors was great. The conversations were shockingly blunt at times but also made me laugh a bunch.
Some of the negative things these women experience is very familiar, so I'm glad someone is calling them out.

Written and hosted by Marc Fennell, It Burns is the story of a 10-year scandal-plagued international competition that will take listeners from the Australian Coast to South Carolina (via an Indian Research Facility). It’s a war filled with larger than life characters. There will be sledging, accusations of cheating, theft and performance enhancing drugs. And allegations that Australia was cheated out of a Guinness World Record.
