This story is a beautifully written, uplifting, thought provoking and joyous thing. It’s a great gift from Tom Michell to the world. And as if that wasn’t enough, then there’s Bill Nighy’s reading. It’s flawless. Somehow he seems to get inside the story and be speaking to us from there, rather than just doing a great job narrating from the sidelines. This is a fabulous collaboration between writer, reader and listener (and of course, Penguin).

Great story, unbelievable reading. In the hands of Jason Isaacs I suspect this story is more powerful as an audiobook than as text.

Warning, regrettably this is mostly a negative review. I’m a big fan of Cleeves, but The Long Call didn’t cut it for me. I found it overwritten, too many threads and in need of a good edit to remove repetition and the irritating reminders of who was related to whom and basic plot points. On the upside it was great to see diversity in choice of protagonist in this series. Unfortunately I also had problems with the reader’s style. I found it choppy, with small chunks of rapidly delivered narration punctuated throughout (even mid sentence) with significant pauses. Good to hear an appealing new voice on this series but I hope the narration rhythm and timing smooth out a lot next time. I will get the next one in the series, but less enthusiastically awaited by me than usual with an Ann Cleeves book.

This is a strange, very oddly written little piece that is impossible to listen to. The reader inserts the citations into the reading every few seconds and content is circular and garbled.

10 out of 5 for Ric Jerrom's astonishing reading of this beautifully imagined and crafted story. Odd and compelling.

Great story. As always excellent reading by Barrett. Niggling worry though that I will not be able to stick with Lamb's increasing personal grossness (and Herron's increasingly juvenile obsession with farting). Only so much of that a woman can overlook.

I'm sure the stories would be good but I couldn't listen to them because of the weird reading style of the narrator.
