Mary Jo Buttafuoco is a New York Times bestselling author, motivational speaker, and nationally recognized advocate for survivors of gun violence, media exploitation, and people living with facial paralysis. After being shot in 1992, the catapulted into the true crime media spotlight, Mary Jo transformed a public tragedy into public service. Her 2009 memoir, Getting It Through My Thick Skull: Why I Stayed, What I Learned, and What Millions of People Involved with Sociopaths Need to Know, draws on her personal experiences to shed light on sociopathic behavior, emotional manipulation, and the patterns that trap individuals in toxic relationships.
An experienced public speaker, Mary Jo has appeared on major television platforms to share her story and advance public understanding of trauma, mental health, and addiction-recovery issues. Her interviews and television features, including high-profile programs and news features, have helped bring awareness to facial-paralysis conditions and broaden public access to information about treatment and support.
