What Mark Diamond does: Empowers teachers, excites students and increases state writing assessment scores with his Writing to Command Attention! workshops, books and keynote presentations. How he does it: With humorous irreverence and game show host exuberance, Mark presents simple, sensible and original narrative, persuasive and informational methods to thousands of elementary and secondary educators and students each year. Prime objective: To provide teachers with the tools and confidence to be enthusiastic instructors of writing, without burdensome planning and assessment. The method behind the madness: Mark analyzes and deconstructs professional contemporary writing samples to construct and refine his original training methods. The end result is effective writing that commands the attention of the intended reader from start to finish. Where he comes from: Mark Diamond (Mr. D) is considered one of the Southeast's foremost children's writing specialists. A certified Creative Writing and Gifted Ed teacher with Georgia's DeKalb County for more than eight years, he started Writing to Command Attention! Workshops in 1999. Mark has been featured nationwide at educational conferences, including the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE), the Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia Reading Association annual conventions, SE IRA and National Youth-At-Risk. His narrative, persuasive and informational writing instruction methods have been adopted as the foundation of many district and school writing programs. A prolific writer himself, Mark is the creator, publisher and editor of Atlanta Kids Magazine and the uncredited co-author of SRA McGraw-Hill's 2002 Open Court Reading Language Arts Handbook. His own four easy writing guides for students, teachers and parents are 6 Tricks to Student NARRATIVE Writing Success, 6 Tricks to Student PERSUASIVE Writing Success, 6 Tricks to Student INFORMATIONAL Writing Success, and 6 Tricks to Student Writer's ORIGAMI Success. Mr. D holds a Masters of Education degree from Oglethorpe University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Communication from Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Public Communication.
