In prison, I'd write secretly in the corner of my cell using abbreviations for any word over five letters. I used a tiny font that I could barely read. I had stolen the pen from guards and wanted to delay the risk of stealing another one when the ink ran out. I kept a journal and I started a novel - I never felt freer while behind bars than when using my imagination and writing that novel. Years after incarceration, writing still opens my heart. Writing is how I explore truth--both the emotional truth and the historical truth. Nowadays, I'm a Ph.D. candidate at NYU in history. I've a background in environmental sustainability. Prior to my arrest in Iran, I taught in Asia, Africa, and Europe about the political economy of healthcare and I was co-director of an environmental education center in Oregon. I have also taught nonviolent communication, qi gong, and yoga. I live in Brooklyn, New York with my partner and child.
