Evelyn Iritani is a veteran journalist and author whose reporting has garnered numerous awards, including the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting and the George Polk Award for Economics Reporting for a series she co-authored at the Los Angeles Times on how Wal-Mart reshaped the global supply chain. A longtime interest in Japan, her family's ancestral homeland, inspired her award-winning book "An Ocean Between Us: The Changing Relationship of Japan and the United States Told in Four Stories from the Life of an American Town." Her new book -- "Safe Passage: The Untold Story of Diplomatic Intrigue, Betrayal, and the Exchange of American and Japanese Civilians By Sea During World War II" -- makes its debut March 10, 2026. Her globetrotting career allowed her to indulge in some of her favorite activities: exploring local markets, eating rich foods and the serendipity of taking the wrong turn in unfamiliar territory.
