B.W. Hedgepeth was born in Riverside Hospital on the bank of the James River on April 17th, 1956 in Newport News, Virginia. His father was a shipbuilder at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company who assisted in the construction of many ships, but he was exceptionally proud of the fact that he had help build the SS United States. B.W. attended Briarfield Elementary and it was there that his writing ability came to the forefront. In 1968 his father had grown tired of the shipyard. He sold their home, packed up the family, and returned to the same farm in North Carolina he had worked some twenty years earlier. B.W. attended D.H. Conley High School and his writing skills emerged. During his senior year the class was instructed to write a short screenplay. B.W. chose to write a court scene. His teacher was so impressed that she had him choose several classmates and they acted out the scene in class. B.W. graduated and was accepted at The Newport News Shipyard Apprentice School as an inside machinist. After a year and a half he became disenchanted with the job. In 1978 he joined the military. It was about this same time he became interested in writing poetry. After four years in the Army Signal Corp which included two years in Germany, B.W. returned to Virginia and was hired by Contel, a company that maintained the communications infrastructure of military bases along the East Coast. In 1995 he married and had three children, Nicole, Ashley, and a son Skylar. B.W. now resides in Jacksonville, North Carolina with his daughter Ashley. He enjoys a good book, meaningful movies, cold beer, fishing with his best friend Nelson, and the company of his dog Rosco and cat Tiger.
