5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Read
Reviewed in Australia on 13 January 2020
Format: Kindle Edition
Wow what a read!. In the immortal words of the legendary Bette Davis from the classic, All About Eve, “Fasten Your Seatbelts, It’s Going to be a Bumpy Night!”, this was definitely my experience when reading this book. I was up all night reading this and loved how Alison wasted no time in getting things going and how she had me buckling up as she took me on a wild ride into the lives of Alice and Dominic. As the blurb suggests, it is an absolutely gripping psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the last page.

Alison has created a plot that is everything I love in a psychological thriller. Full of mystery and suspense with twists and turns to keep you on your toes, I was completely hooked on this plot when I read what this story was about. It is so much more than a boy meets girl, they get married and live happily ever story. It is a frightening insight and account into how the person you thought you could trust with everything in your life, isn’t the person that they have portrayed themselves to be, which makes the life that you have been living a complete lie. How is Alice able to move on from that? Well you will just have to read this book to find out won’t you…

The characters of Alice and Dominic are very well developed and definitely had me feeling mixed emotions between the two. My heart broke for Alice. Having given herself to the man she believed loved her, only finding out he was not who she thought he was, was just a massive kick in the guts for her. Although I did find her naive at times, I guess this was due to her love for him. It is easy to have an opinion looking in from the outside than actually living it. Now Dominic on the other hand was an ass and a master manipulator. As the villain he has been perfectly written in this role. Aside from my views of him, I really did enjoy reading the story from his point of view and to find out how he was able to cover his tracks and lies. It was actually quite exhausting to read in how it was done.

With writing that is both engaging and captivating, what I really loved the most was how Alison structured this book. It starts with a prologue that gives you goosebumps and sets up the tone of the story, it then moves into Alices point of view of when she met Dominic, It goes back to the current day in the middle of the book where it leaves you on a cliffhanger, then moves to Dominic’s point of view then back to the current day where it all comes together in the thrilling conclusion. It is very cleverly done, different and kept my attention throughout.

Even though this is only the second book I have read from Alison, I have quickly learned that you need to make sure you have nothing else to do when starting a book from her as you cannot not put them down! The Man She Married takes you hostage right from the start and keeps ahold of you till the end. I am so glad that I have been introduced to Alison’s work and I look forward to I hope many more books to come from her. It was an absolute pleasure to be able to read and review The Man She Married which I highly recommend.

Thank-you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Alison James for allowing me to read an advanced copy of The Man She Married which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable, Quick Read
Reviewed in Australia on 16 January 2020
Format: Kindle Edition
An okay psychological thriller that sees Alice caught up in a whirlwind romance with handsome Dominic Gill, and soon finds herself married to him, even though she felt rushed. Things are going okay, though there's a few times his behaviour has been a concern, then suddenly he's gone, killed in an accident. Alice confirms that yes, it's her husband that has died, however when Dom's estranged brother turns up to view the body, he's adamant it's not Dom. So just who has Alice been married to for the last 3 years?

I found The Man She Married to be an enjoyable, quick read, and I finished it in a day. My main concern with this book is things are revealed quickly, too early in the book, and after that it's a case of waiting for everything to come together at the end, thus taking the suspense out of it. There were some revelations later in the book however, and it's definitely one to consider reading for a rainy day.

My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

4.0 out of 5 stars RED FLAGS GET HEART THUMPING
Reviewed in Australia on 14 January 2020
Format: Kindle Edition
You know when you read a book and the red flags start popping up all over the place, and you're telling the character, 'No, don't do it! Noooooo!' ... that's exactly what I did for the first third of the book. Alice has good reason not to trust Dominic when she meets him - she was left at the altar by her fiance - but he ticks all the boxes (and he's a really good kisser). So, despite a few niggling doubts, she marries him. And that's when things really get started.

The story shifts to her husband's POV about a third of the way through and all those red flags were there for a reason. But despite a few "clues" I was spot on about, things still did not play out exactly as I expected.

Good, solid writing, a well-crafted and paced story in two POVs, and an especially creepy antagonist all added up to a gripping and twisty page-recommended. If you like psychological thrillers/domestic noir, check this one out.

I absolutely loved this book and it’s by a new author to me. I thought the story was really well crafted and cleverly told with well defined characters. It went at a cracking pace but never left out any detail with some added little surprises that really captured my imagination. It was a fascinating concept for a story so that had me hooked to begin with but as it unfolded, the story became stronger and more compelling. I would highly recommend this book so I’m now off to find more by this author !

Thought it was going to be a good read and to begin with, it was. Then it went down hill. Too many coincidences, second half was far fetched and lots of hoping onto planes like it was a daily form of travel at a moment's notice. The Private Investigator.....was he for real ?

THIS BOOK WAS BETTER THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE. REALLY ENJOYED THE PLOT. DOES MAKE YOU THINK HOW EASY IT CAN BE TO BE CONNED BY A PERSON WHO IS NOT WHO HE SAYS HE IS. I DO GOOGLE MOST PEOPLE THOUGH SO REALLY WANTED THIS PERSON TO WAKE UP & SMELL THE ROSES SOONER AND THEN SHE COULD HAVE TURNED IT AROUND ON HIM.

A hard to put down domestic thriller with plenty of backstory and lots of current dilemmas for the protagonist. It was a well-written premise that continued to surprise me until the brilliantly executed denouement. I cannot wait to read more from this author.

This book was totally ruined for me as I thought I'd give audio a go and can honestly say I felt sick as the narrator shouted most of the way through and did the strangest of voices.....do not use audio with this book you'll loose the plot literally. Will not be using audio again that's for sure..
