I loved this book! It was easy to read and a great account of how it feels to have mental health concerns. Hopefully people read this book, although they may identify with Claire, they will at least understand the depth of despair someone may feel when they are suffering with a mental health issue. Claire is just a regular person with a wonderful family. It can happen to anyone! Hopefully too, this book helps reduce some of the stigma that still exists around mental health issues. Beautifully written and a joy to read.
Clare Bowditch opens her heart and soul in Your Own Kind of Girl and writes honestly about the mental health issues she experienced in childhood and as a young adult. It’s painful reading at times but as the chapters peel away and we see Clare start to manage what was happening to her, the book becomes one of those you don’t want to end. Clare seems to have been oblivious to her own exceptional talents so there are many twists and turns. But when the sadness turns into joy and her creativity is recognised, happiness and love follow. I loved this book, it’s incredibly sad but also funny, enlightening and inspirational. I hope she continues to write.
I didn’t pick a great book for me to read in a psych ward receiving treatment for anxiety and c-PTSD. But I can never start a book and not finish it. Clare’s experiences are very different from my own but that’s not bad or good. I appreciate her candid recounting and it’s always good to not feel alone.
This is the book I didn’t know I needed! So inspiring, joyful, heartbreaking and funny. I couldn’t put it down but never wanted to finish it. I have always enjoyed Clare’s music and storytelling when I’ve been to her shows, but this book takes the storytelling to the next level. Whether you want to laugh or cry, this book is for you!
Clare is an extraordinary writer. She’s real, raw, funny, honest, candid, and feels like a friend that everyone has. This was a great read, especially for anyone who has that voice in their head that makes them question every little thing and decision. Thank you for your story.
I really wanted to love this after such positive reviews. Unfortunately I found I couldnt finish it. I found it was bogged down in unnecessary detil in parts and lost the flow of the first few chapters. It is however a very geniune and honest account which is very generous of Clare.
Thank you Clare Bowditch for finding the courage & time to share your truth and the stories you told yourself along the way. An insightful and moving memoir that unlocks some truth bombs that reside within us all. #FOF #nameittotameit
This book is an excellent telling of a journey through a mental health episode. I especially appreciated the references to the work of the amazingly talented therapist Claire Weekes, who I had just recently discovered myself.
