5.0 out of 5 stars Urzila as funny as on stage and television

I fully expected to enjoy this book. I was introduced (figuratively speaking) to Urzila Carlson by my daughter who had seen her perform at the Melbourne Comedy Festival. I have since watched her during various television performances, and wasn't disappointed when i read her book, Rolling with the Punches.
What I didn't expect was the very interesting background on South African politics that she wrote about, seen through her eyes. She is very self deprecating, but not in a 'poor me' way.
Loved your book Urzila, love your spirit, and can't wait to see you when we are finally out of lockdown here in Victoria.

The title is what Urzila gets us doing whenever we hear her!! My favourite comic has written a wonderful autobiography which really gives us great access and insight into this wonderful lady. Highly recommend this book and EVERYTHING else Urzila puts out there for our enjoyment.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it so much

This book was more than a funny romp through the early years of Urzila's life......I'm hoping for a sequel.....the next stage.
For me, there was a lot of nostalgia too.....I was born in a similar place, have a deadbeat father, am gay......even immigrating to Australia on the very same day....for a South African, this book reminds us of the incredible funniness of the Afrikaans sense of humour....something I miss a lot.
Just like her stand up shows, her book embodies her wit, charm, sensitive and outrageous sides of her personality.
I'm a big fan.....and have thoroughly enjoyed this book.

What an amazing story. Such an interesting life - sad at times but always triumphant. Lots of “laugh out loud” moments. Loved reading about the hurdles and great attitude towards every one of them.

Urzila is brilliantly funny, full of heart and a damn good story teller, I do wish there’d be another book as I was so disappointed when this one ended.

This hurts to say because I love her stand-up but this book was hard to read. I gave up about a third of the way in. Sorry Urzila.

Having found Urzila on tv and finding her humour very funny I was interested to see she had written a book. It was a great book, well written, easy to follow. No major shocks or surprises, just an interesting read about growing up in South Africa, her great outlook on the difficulties she faced. So glad she's living in my part of the world so I can get to see more of her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, real, relatable - get to know Urzila Carlson ('don't call me Carlson')

Rolling with the Punchlines is the story of an amazing life filled with ups & downs. A deeply human story but one unique to Urzila Carlson, a thoughtful person and fantastic comedian. She shares her experiences growing up in South Africa, traveling abroad, and eventually emigrating to New Zealand. She also shares moments as a child, friend, girlfriend, wife, and mother that are all very relatable.
After watching her Netflix special i was glad to read this memoir & learn more about her!

5.0 out of 5 stars Urzila the person

I love watching Urzila the comedian on TV and had a great night out attending her live show. Whilst this book included some laugh out loud moments (don't read the chapter on waxing in public when you need to be quiet!) and I could definitely hear Urzila's voice, it mainly provided more of an insight into Urzila the person. I feel I've got to know my favourite comedian a little bit more and I'm glad I have! Thanks for sharing something so personal with us Urzila.

A great read, I didnt want to put it down. There are so many laugh out loud moments - my colleagues looked at me funny in the staff room on my lunch breaks! I just wanted more, and I couldn't help it, i read the book with Urzilas voice in my head! I'd love to see her live.
