About this listen

Cameron escapes Denver on his eighteenth birthday with nothing but the clothes on his back—and his baby brother, Luke, swaddled in his arms. He’s fleeing their abusive father, and he has no place to turn. No place, that is, except for the town he knows to be the home of Lizzie Grant, a kindhearted near-stranger. Caloosa Springs is nothing more than a wisp of an idea, but Cameron hopes he is running toward home.

Jase just wants someone to call his own. The son of the town’s stuffy mayor, he’s constantly trying to forge his own path. He thinks he’s discovering it in his fledgling contracting business and with his good friends Oliver, Tyler, Sam, and Wyatt by his side. Eventually, he’ll have to come out to his dad, but that’s a later problem. Things have a way of working out in Caloosa Springs.

Cameron doesn’t know that Lizzie is dead. Jase doesn’t know anything about taking care of babies. But when the brothers show up in Caloosa, abused and afraid to trust a single soul, everyone’s going to have to figure things out quickly. Jase can fix just about anything, but can he rebuild a family… and construct something real and true with Cameron?

Built in Caloosa Springs is a heartwarming, sweet, funny romance that features plenty of steam and a guaranteed HEA. Listeners should note some scenes of domestic abuse and homophobia.

Escaping a perpetually drunk and abusive father in Denver, Cameron takes a risk by bringing his baby brother to the tiny town of Caloosa Springs, CO. Cameron has done things to survive that he is not proud of but it seems like he’s given a wonderful second chance by the warmly welcoming townsfolk, especially Jason (Jase), the mayor’s son. In fact the only fly in the ointment is the pompous mayor, who hates the thought of Jase being gay or that Jase might be interested in Cameron. Jase and his father just don’t see eye to eye about Cameron and Jase’s father’s influence might just endanger Cameron and Luke.

Although the start of this story was harrowing, it’s mostly sweetness and light once Cameron hits Caloosa Springs. It’s a bit of an instalove romance—at least from Jase’s POV—but Cameron is understandably more circumspect. I enjoyed the family drama that Jase and Cameron each had to deal with and I enjoyed the warm embrace of the town—it’s the sort of hospitality that small town are known for. 🎧 Davis Michaels was a new-to-me narrator, he has quite a southern twang. I didn’t warm to his voice but I felt it suited the story ok.

Moving and satisfying small-town romance!
