Publisher's Summary

Ikey Solomon is very successful indeed, in the art of thieving. Ikey's partner in crime is his mistress, the forthright Mary Abacus, until misfortune befalls them. They are parted and each must make the harsh journey from 19th century London to Van Diemens Land.

In the backstreets and dives of Hobart Town, Mary learns the art of brewing and builds The Potato Factory, where she plans a new future. But her ambitions are threatened by Ikey's wife, Hannah, her old enemy. The two women raise their separate families. As each woman sets out to destroy the other, the families are brought to the edge of disaster.

Writer and Narrator like no other

I would recommend all Bryce Courtenay’s books to everyone young and old. He is the most wonderful storyteller and Humphrey Bower beautifully narrators these on audible that I can hear his voice when I read the physical books.
I love that he has narrated the collection as if he is the storyteller.

Superb engrossing book

A story more interesting than fiction. Really brings to life the conditions faced at the time. The narrator is also superb

Supurb book and narrator

I will just keep following the books Humphrey Bower has narrated. He's hands down the best there is. This was a fabulous book and omg when Sperm whale Sally had the two captains fighting over her and the tattoo, had me in stitches. A must listen.
