Publisher's Summary

I cast my eyes over the impressive meal I’ve cooked and the half-empty crystal wine glasses. As our guests smile graciously, I squeeze my husband’s shoulder. It’s vital I get his friends to like me. To believe this version of me. Because I’ll do anything to stop them learning the truth…

Ever since I met my handsome husband Dr Gabe Bonneville, I started playing the role of the perfect housewife. He works hard as a surgeon, so I look after our home, and throw elaborate dinner parties with champagne cocktails for his best friends Hugh and Anita. He’s my safe place and my chance to have the family I’ve always wanted.

I’ve managed to hide the mornings when I wake up and see a face in the shadows. I haven’t told Gabe the truth about the woman who raised me, or told him about the therapy I’ve been getting so my secrets stay hidden in the dark. I haven’t questioned his past so he doesn’t ask about mine. I see the way Anita looks at him sometimes, but I’ll never say a word.

Until the letter arrives at the front door. The beautiful, expensive card shakes in my hand as I read the neat black handwriting.

Someone knows I’m not just a housewife. And the lies I’ve told will be all that’s left when I disappear…

Stories well blended

I really enjoyed this.
The narration was great and I particularly enjoyed the long suspense and red herring.
The characters were likeable (well, mostly) and well rounded.
I have already added more from this author for a binge listen!

Excellent Series

A strong recommendation rather than a review perhaps. This is a 7 book series. As I write, 6 of the 7 books were free and the 7th (not sure which I paid for from memory) was well worth the credit. As is the case with a series, it’s ideal to listen them in order, or at least close, but each book truly stands on its own, so whichever order you go in or even if you only read 1 or a few, it’s a very easy, reader friendly series. It’s helped me to take my mind off of things as life has had me in an anxious place, so it’s been a welcome distraction.

I could pick on a few of Dan Riley’s reflections as being very marginally “problematic” I suppose, but I suspect that it’s an intentional, deliberate part of his character on the part of the author. I almost wish I were in a book club, reading/listening to the same series at the same time as a handful of others that we could discuss in like weekly meetings ups or something.

Highly recommend.

A gripping psychological thriller, unputdownable

I really enjoyed listening to this, although it would have been better if the female characters were read by a female voice. Overall an enjoyable listen, well written and well read. Thankfully not a high body count!
