With so many affected, it is time to revisit our perceptions of people with disabilities. Psychologist and educator Thomas Armstrong illuminates a new understanding of neuropsychological disorders. He argues that if they are a part of the natural diversity of the human brain, they cannot simply be defined as illnesses. Armstrong explores the evolutionary advantages, special skills, and other positive dimensions of these conditions.

Baffling and beloved, with the capacity to go from joy to frustration in seconds, young children are some of the most misunderstood people on the planet. Parents and caregivers struggle with these little ones, who are known for their extreme behaviour, from tantrums, resistance, and aggression to separation anxiety, bedtime protests, and not listening. The key to understanding youngsters lies in realizing that their challenging behaviour is not personal, nor is it a disorder or deficit.

Instead, Barrett shows, we construct each instance of emotion through a unique interplay of brain, body, and culture.

Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Scattered Minds explodes the myth of attention deficit disorder as genetically based - and offers real hope and advice for children and adults who live with the condition.
Gabor Maté is a revered physician who specializes in neurology, psychiatry and psychology - and himself has ADD. With wisdom gained through years of medical practice and research, Scattered Minds is a must-listen for parents - and for anyone interested how experiences in infancy shape the biology and psychology of the human brain.
Scattered Minds:
- Demonstrates that ADD is not an inherited illness, but a reversible impairment and developmental delay
- Explains that in ADD, circuits in the brain whose job is emotional self-regulation and attention control fail to develop in infancy - and why
- Shows how 'distractibility' is the psychological product of life experience
- Allows parents to understand what makes their ADD children tick, and adults with ADD to gain insights into their emotions and behaviours
- Expresses optimism about neurological development even in adulthood
- Presents a programme of how to promote this development in both children and adults

Good advice for everyone, not just those with ADD
I think a lot of the advice, compassion and understanding presented in this book not only specifically applies to ADD children and adults but the world could significant benefit generally by applying these approaches with all people in mind. Everybody wants to feel safe, to feel heard, feel loved and feel like they can be their own true self. Those that suffer with ADD certainly have a higher mountain to climb and collectively we need to be aware and be educated and this book certainly goes a long way in presenting what we all need to hear, understand and apply.
