Story
In this vast and gorgeous tapestry of a novel, serf and master, Cossack and tsar, priest and Jew are brought together in a family saga which unrolls through centuries of history to reveal that most impenetrable and mysterious of lands - Russia. Through the life of a little town east of Moscow in the Russian heartland, Edward Rutherfurd creates a sweeping family saga from the baffling contradictions of Russia's culture and her peoples - bleak yet exotic, brutal but romantic, land of ritual yet riddled with superstitious fears.

Story
It had been Mother's secret and mine, one passed down through the de Winter women for generations. I would ensure it was kept that way, until I was ready to pass it on.When Anneke Sheldrake is forced to find a way to support her family after her father is lost at sea, she turns to the business by which her mother’s family once prospered: brewing ale.Armed with her Dutch mother’s recipes and a belief that anything would be better than the life her vindictive cousin has offered her, she makes a deal with her father’s aristocratic employer: Anneke has six months to succeed or not only will she lose the house but her family as well.Through her enterprise and determination, she inadvertently earns herself a deadly enemy. Threatened and held in contempt by those she once called friends, Anneke nonetheless thrives. But on the tail of success, tragedy follows and those closest to her pay the greatest price for her daring.Ashamed, grieving, and bearing a terrible secret, Anneke flees to London, determined to forge her own destiny. Will she be able to escape her past, and those whose only desire is to see her fail?A compelling insight into the brewer’s craft, the strength of women, and the myriad forms love can take.

Twists & turns in the storyline…
- By Kathy on 12-04-2024
Publisher's Summary
The towering story of five families through 100 centuries of turmoil, tyranny, passion and prosperity from Edward Rutherfurd, the author of London, Russka and New York.
In a novel of extraordinary richness the whole sweep of British civilisation unfolds through the story of one place, Salisbury, from beyond recorded time to the present day. The landscape - as old as time itself - shapes the destinies of the five families.
The Wilsons and the Shockleys, locked in a cycle of revenge and rivalry for more than 400 years. The Masons, who pour their inspired love of stone into the creation of Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral. The Porters, descended from a young Roman soldier in exile. And the aristocratic Norman Godefrois, who will fall to the very bottom of the social ladder before their fortunes revive.

A masterpiece if you speed it up
I read Sarum a number of years ago but felt I needed to re-acquaint myself with the story as I plan to visit Salisbury soon.
The Audible version is best played at 1.2x otherwise it becomes soporific. And the narrator insists on pronouncing 'grimaced' as grim-ACED rather than the more usual GRIM-ist. As an antipodean am I wrong? Other than that, it is the most wonderful historical fiction. The characters might be fictional but 5000 years of storied England's history comes alive and is told in such a memorable way!
I also read Rutherfurd's 'New York' before visiting New York. Another masterful story!

a Masterpiece
one of the best books of all time. I first read Sarum in the '80s and was mesmerised by the descriptions and beauty that Rutherfurd evoked. Ever since Audible began i have been anxiously awaiting Sarum's arrival as an audio book, and it's here at last !

if You Know the Place You'll Love It
I'm not particularly interested in English history, and have no connection to Sarum. I tried this audiobook because it's long and gets great reviews. I use audiobooks to get to sleep and as background, so tend to loose the plot. This worked pretty well here. The performance is excellent, but overall calming in tone, and if you tune out sections, you can still pick up the thread. I sense that, had I paid better attention, I would have found and enjoyed unifying themes. Probably worth a second go though to find out. For English history buffs, I imagine it would be fantastic.

Least favorite from this author
It’s a good quality story, as always. Compared to half a dozen other books I read from this author this one is my least favorite. I found the story a bit slow and characters the least interesting. Narration amazing as always.

Listen at 1.5 speed
Interesting perspectives on changes through history, but it is a pity that the reader is so ponderous, pauses at places he shouldn't and has a pattern to his voice. Once I realised I could set the speed to 1,5 times it was more bearable to listen to him.
