Hardly anyone ever leaves Des Moines, Iowa. But Bill Bryson did, and after 10 years in England he decided to go home, to a foreign country. In an ageing Chevrolet Chevette, he drove nearly 14,000 miles through 38 states to compile this hilarious and perceptive state-of-the-nation report on small-town America.

Story
When Monisha Rajesh announced plans to circumnavigate the globe in 80 train journeys, she was met with wide-eyed disbelief. But it wasn’t long before she was carefully plotting a route that would cover 45,000 miles - almost twice the circumference of the earth - coasting along the world’s most remarkable railways; from the cloud-skimming heights of Tibet’s Qinghai railway to silk-sheeted splendour on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. Packing up her rucksack - and her fiancé, Jem, Monisha embarks on an unforgettable adventure.

Excellent as always
Mr. Bryson is such a clever man. His writing is brilliant. Mr. Roberts performance is so funny and well done. I do wonder how much he must practice to get the words right. Well done both of you.

encapsulates the life and times of the Island
really loving the narrator. They sell the story and make it successful. Bill Bryson has a wonderfully flowing narrative. One that I can identify with and totally understand. Thank you!

Not bad
The version read by the author is much better. The artist doing the reading is fine, but the authors own voice is better

Just delightful!
Another charming Bryson special. A whole heap of positively cynical bumbling around my homeland. So funny to listen to his interpretations of familiar towns and his grasp of the English way of life is so on point. Can’t stop won’t stop enjoying these Bryson titles, included in my membership too. Way better than a lot of books I’m paying for. Highly recommend
