The Magic of Awareness

-
Story
The paradox of awareness is very profound and yet very simple. It can't be described because it has no objective qualities and no limitation. Sometimes it comes naturally to the surface when we are fully in the present moment and no longer lost in thought or mental projections. Pure consciousness is neither high nor low, neither pleasant nor unpleasant, neither good nor bad. No matter where we are, no matter what we are doing, we always have an immediate access to that inner stillness.

Story
In this groundbreaking audiobook, neuropsychology professor Chris Niebauer explains how after decades of research on the brain, Western science may have inadvertently confirmed a fundamental tenet of Buddhism: anatta, or the doctrine of "no self". Niebauer shows how findings in neuropsychology suggest that our sense of self is actually an illusion created by the left side of the brain and that it exists in the same way a mirage in the middle of the desert exists: as a thought rather than a thing.

The jhānas are eight progressive altered states of consciousness that can be identified with the aspect of the Buddha’s Eightfold Path called Right Concentration. Training in concentration leads to these states, each of which yields a deeper and subtler state of awareness than the previous one. The jhānas are not in themselves awakening, but they are a skillful means for stilling the mind in a way that leads in that direction, and they are attainable by anyone who devotes the time and sincerity of practice necessary to realize them.

And accompanying each ending is a beginning, though it may be unclear what the beginning holds. In How We Live Is How We Die, Pema Chödrön shares her wisdom for working with this flow of life—learning to live with ease, joy, and compassion through uncertainty, embracing new beginnings, and ultimately preparing for death with curiosity and openness rather than fear.

The idea is that by beginning with one's first rather coarse commonsense understanding, one progresses through increasingly subtle and more refined stages until one arrives at complete and perfect understanding. Each stage in the process prepares the mind for the next in so far as each step is fully integrated into one's understanding through the meditation process.

One book to listen to over and over again
This book has a lot of compact wisdom. The messages does get repeated in many different ways but, it is through repetition, that we learn.
I know that I will have to come back to it, several times still for the message to sink in and to be integrated in my life.
Especially, in our self obsessed society, this wisdom can help transform our individual and societal thinking and behaviour. Thank you for addressing many issues, which particular us Westerners face.

Spelling out what is
I am delighted to find this and it's companion. It has cleared up things that I needed answers to for many years. Like, for instance, what do we pray to? These books are dense, the more you listen, the more you find. I use when I wake up at night, requiring focus. I also understood the primacy of just sitting and following breath, and the necessity to practice it regularly. No more, no less, you don't need to put a leg on a snake. Finally, that present mind is the way to Buddha mind, in fact is identical. Thank you Anam for your wonderful clarify. David

And even though I would like to hear it from Anam Himself in his own voice which transmits the vibration of his level of consciousness directly, I really appreciated the voice and performance style of Fred Stella very much, Thankyou Fred for doing such a fine job and having such a pleasant voice!
