Story
Dolly Jamieson is not homeless, she's merely between permanent abodes. The 78-year-old spends her days keeping warm at the local library, where she enjoys sparring with the officious head librarian and helping herself to the free morning tea. It's not so bad, really. But it's certainly a far cry from the 1960s, when this humble girl from Geelong became an international star of the stage. As the acclaimed lead in the Broadway production of The Rose of France, all Dolly's dreams had come true. So how, in her old age, did she end up here?

Story
Birdy thought she would have to wait until she was free again to see Rose, but now Rose has been convicted of a shocking crime and she and Birdy will be together. Birdy has been saving all her anger for Rose. It is Rose who should have protected her and kept her safe. Birdy was little but Rose was big, and she knows Rose could have saved her. This is a story about monsters who hide in plain sight and about the secrets we keep from ourselves. It is about children who are betrayed and adults who fail them.

Story
It’s 2006, and terror scaremongering in the media has rattled the residents of sleepy, suburban Dunlop Crescent. When a Maori family moves into number 14, the local cranks assume they are Middle Eastern terrorists hell-bent on destroying the Australian way of life. Rumour has it that they plan to turn their house to face Mecca. This sets off an extraordinary chain of events that embroils the entire neighbourhood as well as cynical media figures, bumbling antiterrorist police and a gang of white supremacists with a radical plan to wake up the country and ‘preserve Australian values’.

Publisher's Summary
Lenny Marks is good at not remembering.
She has spent the last twenty years not thinking about the day her mother left her when she was still a child. Her stepfather's parting words, however, remain annoyingly unforgettable: 'You did this.'
Now thirty-seven, Lenny prefers contentment and order over the unreliability of happiness and the messiness of relationships. She fills her days teaching at the local primary school, and her nights playing Scrabble with her pretend housemate, watching reruns of Friends and rearranging her thirty-six copies of The Hobbit.
Recently though, if only to appease her beloved foster-mum, Lenny has set herself the goal of 'getting a life'.
Then, out of the blue, a letter arrives from the Adult Parole Board. And when her desperate attempts to ignore it fail, Lenny starts to unravel.
Worse, she starts to remember...

Had l no expectation of this book and was very pleasantly surprised.
l really have enjoyed this book.
The title was so quirky l had to read it.
So many of the characters were so relatable. l have met so many of these people in some way or another. Each struggling with their daily existence. No blood and gut every where, FBI agents struggling with the mass murders of their families and all that tosh. This was human scale - what street in Australia does not havrle a wife basher, chaotic family relationships - relatable.

Charming story.
Lenny is socially inept. She is not comfortable with close contact. She is somewhat a loner. Her memories of her childhood are fractured and she has adapted to be alone and in control of her life. Snippets of her past start resurfacing after she receives a letter that directly relates to a person in her past that caused her extreme pain and stress. Lenny is a resilient and remarkable character, you can’t help but like her. I enjoyed how the plot evolved. Some very funny parts too eg, the trivia night. Excellent narration. Certainly a book to be friends with.
