Story
Like most of us, Toni Lodge tells little white lies all the time. Whether it's "I'm five minutes away" or "It must have gone to my spam folder", most of these innocent fibs are harmless. But what if you realised that you weren't just lying about the little things, but the big "life" stuff too? When Toni sat down to write this memoir, she realized that the lies she was telling herself were hiding some pretty important home truths—about her work, her identity and her mental health. In her dogged pursuit of these truths, she brazenly explores everything.

Publisher's Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
#1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER
A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by iCarly and Sam & Cat star Jennette McCurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life.
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.
In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is thrust into fame. Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants.
Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.

Life-changing, moving, validating, & so bravely honest
I don’t have enough words to express what it’s mean to read this book. Jennette is such an evocative, eloquent writer who paints such a vivid picture of adoring child-like wonder & love for her mother while accompanying it with the bone-chilling undertones of darkness that only her adult perspective could provide. I cannot applaud her bravery enough in highlighting the abuse & exploitation of children in the entertainment industry, especially by producers and the children’s parents themselves. She described so perfectly the trauma of being abused by a parent, the person who is supposed to love you unconditionally. The grief of losing that parent & then having to reckon with the reality of their abuse after-the-fact & grapple with your entire identity once the curtain has been lifted & you’re forced to confront the truth. I think this story is going to be so instrumental in validating so many people’s pain & ongoing suffering from parental abuse (particularly by a mother) and with eating disorders, which are still not taken as seriously as they should be. I am thankful for her that her mother passed when she did & freed Jennette from a path that could have ended her own life. Her story is so inspirational and moving and truly gives so much hope that healing is possible. Thank you Jennette for writing this book and sharing your story with the world.

An honour to experience
So worth the hype. Beautiful and heartbreaking. Adds so much to hear it in the author’s own voice. So many trigger warnings but if you think you’re able to handle them, I would highly recommend listening to this book.
