Critic Reviews

"Matthew Reilly novels should come with health warnings on the cover ... the non- stop life-threatening action ... is not for the faint-hearted. It’s a wild ride." ( The Daily Telegraph)

Gripping from start to finish.

I absolutely loved The Great Zoo of China. Matthew Reilly's descriptions are vivid and out of this world! I was gripped throughout and absolutely love the lead character Dr CJ Cameron. The narration of this book was really enjoyable.

Don't waste your time

Predictable and I felt the author was extremely lazy with this story. Very disappointed - this was my first audio book - won't be reading this authors books

Last minute saves abound!

I enjoyed the premise of this book and the first few chapters hooked me, but as soon as the action begins, it quickly becomes a series of alternating last minute saves by either a dragon (if being attacked by the Chinese) or the Chinese (if being attacked by a dragon). I can take one or two of these scenarios playing out in an action story, but it happens over and over again and gets so predictable it becomes tedious.

The only other book I've read of Matthew Reilly is Ice Station, which was fantastic, but like another reviewer mentioned, a lot of his ideas are recycled here. Swap out the ice station for a zoo, killer whales for dragons, corrupt american military for Chinese security, putting an injured marine in a service chute to be rescued later for putting in injured CIA agent into a service chute to be rescued later, and a friendly helpful seal for a friendly helpful dragon. Oh and the obligatory child that needs saving, of course.

Okay to switch your brain off for, but beware if you've already read some of the authors other work.

Always love Matthew Reilly - this is no exception

What did you like about this audiobook?

I have loved all of Matthew Reilly's books and this is no exception. Started off very well... especially for me as I have visited that part of China that he describes so well. He also has a very good understanding of the modern day Chinese aims and goals - and why their current culture impedes their aims to be Number 1 in the world in all things!. I saw all of that for myself.

I was almost half way through the book when I found myself second guessing (correctly) the author!! I have NEVER been able to second guess him before and I was a bit disappointed. But then I realised that the first half of the book is more concerned with the setup and the second half is definitely the old Matthew Reilly - very edge of your seat action - no way you will second guess any of that :) At one point I thought to myself "ohh out of the frying pan into the fire..." and the narrator echoed my words almost immediately.

I would give it 4.5 stars if I could.. 4 seems a bit mean :)

Thanks Matthew - keep on writing!!! (less)

The great zoo of lameness....

Avoid at all costs! The narration is poor and the story line is extremely predictable/basic. Please don't make the same mistake that I did!
