Publisher's Summary

Dylan Mint has Tourette's. His life is a constant battle to keep the bad stuff in - the swearing, the tics, the howling dog that seems to escape whenever he gets stressed. But a routine visit to the hospital changes everything. Overhearing a hushed conversation between the doctor and his mum, Dylan discovers that he's going to die in March. So he makes a list of things he must do before he dies: First, he wants to have real sex with gorgeous Michelle Malloy; Second, he's got to find his autistic best friend Amir a new best bud; Third, he's got to get his dad back home from the army so they can say goodbye properly. It's not a long list, but it's ambitious, and he doesn't have much time. Sometimes you've just got to go for it - no holding back - and see what happens....

This is the launch of a major new writing talent. Brian Conaghan makes you travel every step of the way in Dylan's shoes, laughing and crying - often at the same time - as Dylan faces the twists and turns of an unfair world with glorious optimism and wit.

    "wonderful book. "

interesting and informative, yet intertaining. well written and worth a read, but if you are a delicate flower and easily offended by swear words look for something else.

    "Brilliantly performed "

An excellent performance brings this story expertly to life. The trials and tribulations of the teenage Dylan Mint are at times laugh out loud hilarious as he ponders his way through some of the more confusing and strange things adults do. His first person perspective makes the story all the more involving for the listener.

    "Tourette's for young adults"

I was part way through this book when I realised this was really for young adults. (This is a mistake I often make when I respond to special offers and don't bother to check the full details.) Notwithstanding that I found myself enjoying this gentle tale of a young lad with Tourettes living an ordinary life with an extraordinary affliction. The swearing is pretty graphic, as you should expect, but I have a sneaking admiration for the author for maintaining integrity and keeping this in.
The plot progresses fairly predictably and I did think that Dylan came across as somebody younger than 16 years of age. I suppose this can be explained by the fact he has been over protected by his mother. On the whole this tale has a good and humorous heart and a valuable message for young people in helping them understand Tourettes.

I mostly listened to this in the park and on the bus, even though this was a bad choice. I kept holding my hand on my mouth to try and strangle the laughs. It was seriously hilarious! And the narration is just perfect! I will absolutely listen to this one again.

What made the experience of listening to When Mr. Dog Bites the most enjoyable?

The narrator was wonderful. While the subject matter is not funny at all, the self depracation of the writer is brought out by the narrator, giving the listener some extremely humerous events, calamities and catastrophes

    Story
    "F-f-f-f-fantastic!!!"

This is a truly lovely story about a boy (Dylan Mint) with Tourette Syndrom, who struggles to accept his condition, but has everlasting support in his best mate at school (for children with various issues). It doesn't help that he finds out he is going to die in March and that his mother's new boyfriend, the taxi driver, keeps parking in his dad's parking space. The book is full of wonderful characters, who all seem to have their own agendas, but yet are closely knit and dependent on each other. You get to like them all - except for the bullies! The humour throughout the book is both dry and sweet, but is put to good use as Dylan Mint is full of hormones and bears at times profound thoughts about sex to do with that girl he is so in love with… "When Mr.Dog Bites" is a warm and funny story about friendship, honesty and having to cope with rare conditions, such as Tourette.

    "LISTEN TO THIS AUDIO BOOK"

This is such a good book I was so sad when it ended. The performance is really good, and I think it really helped the main character come alive. I would definately reccomend it. Even though it swears a lot it's all in context and usually because of the main character's Tourette's.

    "A delightful story"

I didn't expect this book to be as humorous and heart warming as it was. The author took Dylan Mint's potentially distressing condition and made us see life from Dylan's funny, refreshing and oddly wise perspective. The narration was spot on and I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who loves a happy ending.

When Mr. Dog Bites - what a brilliant funny, sad, warm book
Didn't take me long to listen to this book, I couldn't put it down (except when sleeping).
Taking a peep into teens with various disabilities was an eye opener.
Narration by Julian Elfer was brilliant
Reason I didn't give this book 5 star rating was that the production needed to be turned up a notch, I had to listen to it on full volume.

    "This book is LOL wonderful!"

Although this is a YA book, it's a stunning read for an adult audience. Not only are there some genuinely LOL moments, it is beautifully crafted with a clever use of word play and draws the reader in as a result. Dylan Mint's life commentary is heart-warming and hilarious at the same time. The narrator on Audible brings the whole book to life too and I would highly recommend it to anyone over 14!
