Story
Aram thinks he’s nothing but a misfit from a small fishing village in a dark corner of the world. As far as Aram knows, he has nothing, with hardly a possession to his name other than a desire to make friends and be accepted by those around him, which is something he’s never known. But Aram is more. Much, much more. Unknown to him, Aram bears within him a gift so old and rare that many people would kill him for it, and there are others who would twist him to use for their own sinister purposes.

Penguin presents the audio download edition of La Belle Sauvage by Philip Pullman, read by Michael Sheen.
Eleven-year-old Malcolm Polstead and his dæmon, Asta, live with his parents at the Trout Inn near Oxford. Across the River Thames (which Malcolm navigates often using his beloved canoe, a boat by the name of La Belle Sauvage) is the Godstow Priory where the nuns live. Critic Reviews
"The best piece of narration I've ever heard." (The Bookseller)
"Michael Sheen's narration of Philip Pullman's new novel is better than an army of voice actors. His voice is impressive, from the crisp, definitive consonants of its higher registers to the rumbly bass notes Sheen summons when some menace enters the scene, to the vast, buttery expanse of his middle range." Love this series
The story takes place before the Golden Compass when Lyra is a baby and is set in Oxford like the Golden Compass. However this Oxford is being threatened by flooding and the action unfolds with it as a backdrop.

The Power of Children
I loved this book. It honoured a deep sense of loyalty and determination. It was not violent for blood lust's sake, but to achieve worthy goals. The characters had depth and humility. A magical journey. Philip Pullman is an extraordinary author.

This has become one of my favourite stories by one of the best fantasy authors. I read His Dark Materials years ago and just now discovered there is this wonderful backstory to enjoy as well. 10/10
