Publisher's Summary

Rigg is well trained at keeping secrets. Only his father knows the truth about Rigg’s strange talent for seeing the paths of people’s pasts. But when his father dies, Rigg is stunned to learn just how many secrets Father had kept from him - secrets about Rigg’s own past, his identity, and his destiny. And when Rigg discovers that he has the power not only to see the past, but also to change it, his future suddenly becomes anything but certain.

Rigg’s birthright sets him on a path that leaves him caught between two factions, one that wants him crowned and one that wants him dead. He will be forced to question everything he thinks he knows, choose who to trust, and push the limits of his talent... or forfeit control of his destiny.

Critic Reviews

"The implications of the boys' power to manipulate the past unfold cleverly…, feeding into the Machiavellian political intrigue for a pulse-pounding climax….Card's many fans will be thrilled by this return to his literary roots.” ( Kirkus)

Intriguing and original

I've not come across anything quite like this. It's a bit inconsistent, sometimes I drifted out of the story, but I definitely want to know what happens next.

Some voices were awful, and the plot got stupid

The main voice actor is really good, but when the book switches to secondary characters POV, and a different narrator takes over it just gets awful.

The overall plot is good, but the delivery was clunky as the book progresses. If I hear how weak the princess is (she can barely walk 100m without falling down in exhaustion) one more time I will scream. The character's gift requires her to walk constantly - hours upon hours each day - yet she can't walk 100m. I was rolling my eyes. This was the beginning of the sucky bit. The author didn't know what to do with a girl (luckily there are only two others in the book), so he went with weak and helpless, it culminated in a clumsy "are we friends, but you are 16 and I am only 11, and girls can't be older" bit of dialogue that made me want to vomit.

Huge parts of the characters were poorly written. The plot itself was good, he character development was woeful.
