Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard book one, by Rick Riordan, read by Christopher Guetig.

Magnus Chase has always been a troubled kid. Since his mother's mysterious death, he's lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits. One day he's tracked down by an uncle he's never met - who tells him an impossible secret: Magnus is the son of a Norse god. The Viking myths are true. The gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Trolls, giants and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday.

To prevent Ragnarok, Magnus must search the Nine Worlds for a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years.

    "Awesome story"

This is a great story, very enjoyable to listen to. Rick Riordan has done it again, amazing plot and fun and enjoyable characters.Although the narrator wasn't the best choice. He didn't pronounce things properly and at times his tone was too flat/monotone.

    "Great Book Terrible Narration"

Try listening to the other recent series, The Hidden Oracle. The narrator is a lot more involved and much better at character description. This one ruins the mood constantly.

    "Good story, horrid narrator!"

The story is really good and interesting. The narration is awful, the book sounds like it is being read by a robot and does make me feel I won't be listening to the next book in this series! My opinion read this book don't listen to it

"Good use of Norse Mythology - Narrator is not good"
What did you like best about Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer? What did you like least?

The story twists and turns as the characters move through the story line similar to the other books written by Riordan. The narrator is not good though in my opinion - reads in the style of a junior school child rather than a streetwise teenager - sorry.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Too childish rather than a homeless teenager.

    "Very disappointing narrator"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator - he is awful. My children have listened to and adored all the Percy Jackson series and the Kane Chronicles but didn't get to the end of this book. Very disappointing.

Would you be willing to try another one of Christopher Guetig’s performances?

    Never.

Was Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer worth the listening time?

    Sadly no.

    Any additional comments?

    Don't bother!

"Brilliantly charming if somewhat hard to get into "

The narrator was lively and really held my interest. His variety of voices gave a distinct personality to each character without distracting from the overall story.

Magnus's story is a little messy to begin, with plot elements that struggle to come together at first but persevere and you'll be rewarded with a rich, exciting journey of four friends that celebrate diversity and excitement.

    "Good Book"

I would listen to this again as Magnus and the others are brilliantly written characters portrayed well in this audiobook. I love Magnus's narration and the audiobook format brings the characters to life in a way the page can't. Rick Riordan's books translate well to this format.

    "Amazing all around."

The narrator of this book took a while to grow on me but now I absolutely admire his work and the enthusiasm he showed when reading this book. The book itself is also unbelievable and amazing with the amount of research must have gone into writing it.

    "Delivery, eh?"
Would you listen to Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer again? Why?

yes, because it cost me money

What was one of the most memorable moments of Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer?

characters. the main characters are great

Would you listen to another book narrated by Christopher Guetig?

as long as he keeps weeeeell away from the Irish accent

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    the main character interactions.

    Any additional comments?

could have improved delivery of, what was meant to be, funny lines. and his irish accent kinda sounds across between russian, romanian and cockney london (like, dick van dyke, london accent) ..... and i think i caught a bit of scottish. ok one sencence was scottish.
read the story before listening to it. love the story, recommend it to anyone who's a fan of rick riordans work.
