It's winter break at St. Vladimir's, but Rose is feeling anything but festive. A massive Strigoi attack has put the school on high alert, and now the Academy's crawling with Guardians - including Rose's hard-hitting mother, Janine Hathaway. And if hand-to-hand combat with her mom wasn't bad enough, Rose's tutor Dimitri has his eye on someone else, her friend Mason's got a huge crush on her, and Rose keeps getting stuck in Lissa's head while she's making out with her boyfriend, Christian! The Strigoi are closing in, and the Academy's not taking any risks....This year, St. Vlad's annual holiday ski trip is mandatory.
But the glittering winter landscape and the posh Idaho resort only create the illusion of safety. When three friends run away in an offensive move against the deadly Strigoi, Rose must join forces with Christian to rescue them. But heroism rarely comes without a price...
Back to school! Listen to more titles in the Vampire Academy series.
©2008 Richelle Mead; (P)2008 Penguin
Richelle does it again in writing about an underground society so carefully fabricated into the 21st century with references from the first novel right through to the last. To have so carefully conducted a story with everything a girl could want: badass female heroes, unconditional loyalty and unforgettable love with a few good punches thrown in. It is still my favourite book series of the 21st century.
"Great Book, Not So Great Narration."
Really enjoying the second installment of the Vampire Academy series. However, I have not enjoyed the narration. Pronunciations are different, even from beginning to end of this book. It took me several minutes to realize who a key character was when the narrator changed the pronunciation of her name midway through the book. I definitely prefer the narrator of the first book to this narrator.
"Book Terrific - Audio Version - not so good"
I've read both Vampire Academy and Frostbite and absolutely loved both stories. I've also listened to the audio versions of both books - the narrator for Vampire Academy was terrific but I had a very hard time liking the narration of Frostbite......I really would love to the the original narrator back for the next book, Shadow Kiss - please!! She was excellent with both female and male characters and I very much enjoyed Dimitri's accent! Frostbite's narration was severely lacking in not only the variation of voices, but the pronunciation of words and overall enthusiasm. As I said I loved the book - I would highly recommend that you pick it up! And I really hope audible returns to the original narrator fo the next one!!
"Great Story/Bad Narration"
I really enjoyed the first Vampire Academy book. It had everything I was looking for: great characters, fast pace story, and vampires with a little love (lust) story thrown in. The book was probably amazing. They changed narrators from the first to the second book in the series. The first narrator was amazing. Each character had a different voice. BUT the new narrator is just AWFUL!!!! She made all the different characters have one of two voice: Females were high pitched and squeaky and the males were monotone. And some times I couldn't even tell the difference. I had to fight my way throw this audiobook. I only gave it 3 Stars, because the book was good. Read the book, and say your credits!!!
Frostbite is a great book and keeps the reader on their toes; however, I prefer the narrator of the first book Vampire Academy to the narrator of Frostbite. You finally get used to the narrator, but she does not have the same flair for this book as the first. Richelle Mead is an amazing author and whether you read or listen to her books, I can promise good entertainment. I have read her latest, Shadow Kiss, and will purchase it from Audible as soon as it comes out; which hopefully it will be soon.
"Amazing with one small flaw"
A great story, I had to listen to it after listening to Vampire Academy, hooked on Rose and Dimitri's not quite there relationship. The only problem I had was that the new narrator doesn't do Dimitri's accent, and every once in a while, when there are no tags, I can't tell if he's talking or if it's another adult.
It doesn't take away from the story's appeal though, which is why I gave the author a five star and am getting the next book
"I like the new narrator..."
I almost didn't buy this one because of the negative review on the narrator but I really liked her. Sure, she pronounces some things differently and she could have put SOME accent in Dmitri's voice but her pronunciation is probably more accurate and the previous narrator needed to scale back her Russian accent. Plus, that whining voice was a little much.
Aside from the narrator, which is incredibly important in audiobooks, the story line was engaging and exciting with plenty of realism mixed in with the fantasy.
Remember, the genre is teen fantasy/sci-fi/paranormal, emphasis on teen. It's no Ann Rice but well worth the read..listen.
"No Russian accent :("
the narrator doesn't do dimitri's lines with a Russian accent like the narrator in the first book
I enjoyed the tension between the characters in this book but didn't like that the narrator does not differentiate between the male and female characters at all. I thought the reader of the first Vampire Academy book did a better job.
"Great book! You won't regret it."
So sad, but still good.
"Can't wait for the next Book!"
Wow!!! I Love this series. The new narrator took a little while to get use too, but she wasn't too bad and the story was so good I forgot about the few words she pronounced differnttly or the lack of accent for Dimitri. I'm not an avid reader. I prefer to listen, but I'm so tempted to go buy the third book. Audible please get Shadow Kiss soon.
Ok so it is yet another vampire book and yes there is yet more forbidden love, but it is forbidden for different reasons and you don't have to worry about the main character going on and on about how he stops him self from killing her and how romantic is that.
This is a great series that i clocked the release dates of books in by diary i was that desperate to finish it
Loved it another great book good listening easy to follow the story and it just hooks you
can't wait for the next one to start... Love nice and easy to listen to fairy tails.
"Amazing and sad heartfelt it was just the best can't wait to read number three :)"
Amazing you should defiantly read the first on first then this one but it was amazing !!!!!!!!!
A sequel that carries on from the predecessor without recapping for the first couple of chapters is always a good sign. This instalment is darker and brings more emphasis on Moroi magic and the mental/emotional bond between Rose and Lissa as their understanding of what is happening between them develops. Add that to the forbidden feelings for her mentor, the long distant mother coming back into her world and the evident dangers to all Moroi, Rose and her friends soon discover that there is more to the Strigoi than meets the vampire eye.
Apart from the middle being a bit slow in places, the build up to an exciting end was appreciated and definitely made me want to download the next book.
As a sequel, this was just as gripping as the first. I did feel though that the first was written in a more adult way. Maybe it was the narrator, though I've had her before and never got that impression. The reader is never allowed to forget Rose is a teenager, and Richelle Mead does an excellent job of portraying her. Far from making her behave differently to other teenagers, she is a very typical one. She can be hurtful, selfish, immature and irresponsible, but she's also loyal, hard working and so full of life. Even though she got on my nerves frequently, she is still a great character. I couldn't put this book down.
