Publisher's Summary

In December of 1282, English soldiers ambushed and murdered Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the Prince of Wales. His death marked the end of Wales as an independent nation and the beginning of over seven hundred years under the English boot.

Footsteps in Time is the story of what might have happened had Llywelyn lived.

And what happens to the two teenagers who save him.

Footsteps in Time is the first book in the After Cilmeri Series.

    "Welsh adds authenticity"

I love this story and the series. Hearing the Welsh characters read with the correct accent and pronunciation makes this book come alive in a new way. Great read!

    "The Adventure gets Better!"

I liked the prequel, “Daughter of Time”, so if you haven’t read/heard that, by all means start with it. And if you have already read “Daughter”, I can truly say that “Footsteps” is even better! There’s a youthful energy, blended with days of yore, and blended well. It’s touted as written for young adults, but with its immersion in history and its often complex situations of people in the power structure, it never ceases to keep this adult engaged and well along for the ride. Anna and David, sister and brother, are very different personalities, so their view of this part of the world and time period and how they engage it differ vastly. And for those that yearn for an artifact from the future to play a role, a small but fun one, you will get your wish.

The first person narrative does switch between David and Anna, but you get used to it quite quickly and quite frankly, it works.

The narration is very good. The narrator has a smoother pace than “Daughter”, so if you found some of that too fast paced, you’ll find “Footsteps” is just right.

    Any additional comments?

This is a wonderful series for anyone who likes alternate history. I have read all the books but it is a pleasure to listen to them too, and to learn how to pronounce all those Welsh words!

"Fascinating blend of history and fiction"

The story captures one's imagination and makes it all seem plausible. You are drawn into the lives of the 3 people thrown into the past who find themselves part of the royal family of Wales.

"A "what if" that's much better than reality"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. I really like this series of books as well as the audio versions. This is something that any medieval/Welsh history fan will enjoy.

What other book might you compare Footsteps in Time: A Time Travel Fantasy to and why?

Anything else that this author has written. The other Cilmeri books and the Lion of Wales series. Even Sharon Kay Penman's Welsh trilogy.

What does Laurel Schroeder bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

We get some flavor for how Welsh and Welsh-speakers might sound. Makes the story at bit more real.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Several. When David and Anna realize whose life they just saved. When Llewellyn tells David that he's David's father. David and Math's post-battle conversation. When Anna and David meet a much loved person again (I won't spoil who it is).

    Any additional comments?

First full book in the After Cilmeri series. Read this and you'll be grabbing book 2 immediately afterward.

Frequently the narration is too fast and gives a sense of anxiety even in calm peaceful parts. Story not strong

Would you consider the audio edition of Footsteps in Time: A Time Travel Fantasy to be better than the print version?

I have not read the printed version of Footsteps. However, I have read Daughter of Time and was thrilled to receive the free audio of Footsteps from the author. I truly enjoyed both but since I'm not Welsh I most appreciated being able to hear how the words sound in the natural tongue. Makes a huge difference.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I didn't really have favorite character because my focus was on trying to put myself in each persons place as I listened.

Have you listened to any of Laurel Schroeder’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't listened to her before but her reading is very clear and exact.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Well, that would have to be when Anna felt herself almost slip back into her own time. Yikes! That made me pause and consider the real ramifications for her had that happened. I'm really glad it didn't.

    Any additional comments?

I liked the history and fiction mixture in this series because it is different than most. This actually changes history giving us a chance to see what MIGHT have happened. How history could have turned out. I'm enjoying that aspect.

    "Good Story"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend the book rather than the audio book to a friend yes. I wouldn't recommend the audio book because the narration sadly lets the book and it's author down.

What other book might you compare Footsteps in Time: A Time Travel Fantasy to, and why?

This book had an excellent plot and although it is in the popular time travel genre, it really is a unique story.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Being from Wales I know what a Welsh accent should sound like, and listening to the narrator get it totally wrong made me cringe. I was too busy at times being thoroughly put off by the accent that I wouldn't be able to concentrate on the story.

Could you see Footsteps in Time: A Time Travel Fantasy being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

I am sure it could be a good TV show, but not sure who the actors would be, just as long as the Welsh characters were actually Welsh, that's what would matter most.

    Any additional comments?

I won this audio book which I was thrilled about because I loved the sound of the story. I promised to review it and am sad that I couldn't write anything more positive about it's narration. GIven a new narrator this book could easily get 4 and 5 star reviews.

    "Awful narration"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Truly disappointing. This could have been a good storyline, but the narrators mono tone coupled with the worst welsh accent I have ever heard...a mixture between bad Scottish and African, totally spoiled it. So much so that I just couldn't listen beyond chapter 2! I would advise you give this one a miss.
