She had become an Abhorsen, Lirael thought, at least on the outside.

"Abhorsen is an excellent denouement for a fantasy that is both literary and popularly accessible. Out loud, the powers of this future classic are intensified, especially through Curry's inspired dramatization." (School Library Journal)
"At once an allegory regarding war and peace and a testament to friendship, this thought-provoking fantasy also resolves the true identities of the popular Dog and Mogget characters and suggests that Nix may still have more tricks up his sleeve." (Publishers Weekly)
"A great conclusion to a wonderful series"
First off - this is the last book in the trilogy starting with Sabriel, and continues the story from Lireal. While several years passed between the action in Sabriel and Lireal, this book picks up immediately from the cliff-hanger that ended Lireal. What does that mean? You need to listen to the first two books before reading this one - don't try to listen to them out of order!
With that said, this book continues the remarkably good young adult series by Garth Nix, although the books are at least as well suited to an adult audience, especially Abhorsen, the darkest of the lot. Abhorsen revolves around a race to stop an ancient evil from being brought into the world, which sounds like a typical fantasy plotline, but in Nix's hands it is made fresh by his complex world and compelling characters. Tim Curry's reading is excellent, and, if not quite as inventive as the first two books, this provides an exciting and impressive conclusion, in which many mysteries are resolved from the rest of the series.
If you like Philip Pullman, J. K. Rowling's more recent (darker) Harry Potter novels, or George R. R. Martin, you should strongly consider listening to this series.
Firstly, the narration was extremely well-done. The only thing that I didn't like very much was Mogget's voice, though this is only a matter of preference, and I cannot fault the narrator for that.
The book itself is very engaging and a good read/listen, though I have to agree with one of the other reviewers about the heroine: she is too whiney and distraught over something she really should have been used to by this point. Being a Remembrancer should be enough for her, especially since she's the only one in the world, but she can't seem to get over not being able to see into the future. This is tiring after a while. Other than that, it's a good story.
This is an excellent conclusion to the Old Kingdom series as well as a perfect conclusion to the story begun in Lirael. I would suggest reading the two previous books in the series first because this book picks up right where the last one left off. This means that the action begins in the first chapter, keeping your interest until the end. The main characters continue their journey to stop an ancient being from destroying the world. This book is filled with magical fights that would rival those in Harry Potter. You will NOT want to stop listening.
"Don't Miss This Thrilling Conclusion!"
My only complaint is that it has to end!!!
This series is remarkable on so many levels. Garth Nix is a genius at creating rich, fantastic worlds fraught with gritty emotion and thrilling excitement and this final installment in the "Old Kingdom" series does not disappoint!
The characters are engaging, the story is tight, and Tim Curry is perfect.
Don't miss this one!
This is a worthy sequel to Lireal (sp?) which I also enjoyed. This book has a bit more depth. The talking dog and cat still made me roll my eyes a little (is it Disney or Jar-Jar?) but it didn't spoil the story. Plus they are more than they seem, like every other character in this book. The ending was satisfying and worth the two-book wait, although the last couple of pages were a little predictable. I had a hard time putting this one down.
"Good voice, good story"
Tim Curry has a great reading voice. He loses his character's voices a couple times, but overall very good. The story is deep fantasy, with lots of complex, arcane magic; deep, inferred history; and evil necromancers. Story sags just a little near the end, but overall, Highly Recommended.
"Love Tim Curry"
These are enjoyable stories but Tim Curry's narration make them special.
"A truly powerful experience"
This last book in the Abhorsen series is one of the most magnificent books I have ever encountered. First of all Tim Curry ... wow!! His voice is so linked to these 3 books (Sabrielle, Lirael and Abhorsen) that I cannot bear to hear other books in this series. I will have to read them the "old fashioned way" with my eyes.... I am totally at a loss about how to go forward with a next book to listen to out of my library as the world I have inhabited while listening to these three books is so full and rich, I fear my next book will wither on the vine in comparison.... I cannot recommend this series highly enough. I have read voraciously since early childhood; was an English Lit major in college and always have one book on my bedside table, one in the living room and one Audible pick on my phone to listen to while driving or exercising or just walking the dog... i.e. I am a Reader and I am saying Do not miss listening to this series.
"Abhorsen is amazing"
This is my second time to listen to this trilogy and the fabulous rendition by Tim Curry. It is a mystery that movies have not been made of this wonderful Tolkien-like epic. Thank you, Messrs Nix and Curry!!
"powerful finish to a gripping story"
i was overcome by this tremendous story, a perfect conclusion to the abhorsen tales. the characters stepped into their roles with an authenticity rarely seen in today's literature, and the voice actors kept up. the result: a beautiful story full of both savagery and kindness, self-sacrifice and petty indulgence, defiant hatred and defiant courage. the author keeps the wondrous feel from the past books, of a world that seems almost like our own, but with the fascinating intangibles turned into something knowable. An inspired work that tells of the human heart. Definitely listen
"An Incredible Listen"
This book is beautifully written, as is always the case with Garth Nix. I did not expect to find an audio version which even began to portray the beauty and depth of his world, but Tim Curry was definitely the right person to chose to do so. If you've read the series, or are simply looking to find out if it's any good, I would definitely suggest listening to this.
Brilliant climax to a superb trilogy. Moves from the Sameth/Lirael 'discovering their identities' phase to riveting action. Brilliantly read, and wonderful characters. The Disreputable Dog and Mogget are witty and intelligent additions to the blossoming pair of Sameth and Lirael, for whom you find yourself rooting for more and more as the tension mounts. A great pity it had to end.
I couldnt wait to get into the third book of the trilogy. The narration was great and the story lived up to expectations. Excellent overall
Good narration throughout then ruined by overwhelming and unnecessary music added during the epilogue which makes the narration difficult to hear.
Garth nix is one of my favourite authors so I am a little biased. me and my partner decided to read to each other every night so we could enjoy the same books together. I chose the old Kingdom series as i had read them when younger and love the story's. we read sabriel and lireal but when it came to abhorsen decided to try listening to the audiobook. Tim curry brings the characters to life in ways neither of us could and makes the experience even more enjoyable.
I would highly recommend the series to anyone loved every second of it.
"warm, griping, dark and slippery"
a good ending. a griping center. apealing beginning. dark moments, tense times and satisfying paces throughout.
"Fantastically converted from page to voice"
An epic fantasy trilogy comes to an end in style well done Garth Nix a
"I'm sobbing - again!"
Wonderful. The story of a girl who doesn't fit in. I love Nix's strong female characters and how strength is found in the midst of weakness.
Beautifully narrated too.
"Abhorsen: finishing the trilogy"
I absolutely loved this! Could not stop listening, loved the storyline and the arc of the characters. Tim curry is amazing in his deliverance and it was such a wonderful end to well loved characters and an amazing story.
This is garth nix best book. Tim Curry's dark, dramatic voice aids the story well. I have read the books myself many times and the audio book is just as good. Thoroughly recommend !
