Story
It would be sheer folly to try to conceal the true nature of Althalus, for his flaws are the stuff of legend. He is, as all men know, a thief, a liar, an occasional murderer, an outrageous braggart, and a man devoid of even the slightest hint of honor. Yet of all the men in the world, it is Althalus, unrepentant rogue and scoundrel, who will become the champion of humanity in its desperate struggle against the forces of an ancient god determined to return the universe to nothingness.

Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Publisher's Summary
Here starts an adventure that will span lifetimes and worlds. Discover where the story begins. Raymond E. Feist is an internationally best-selling author. My name is Pug. I was once an orphaned kitchen boy, with no family and no prospects, but I am destined to become a master magician….
War is coming to the Kingdom of the Isles from another world, bringing with it chaos and destruction. Pug yearns to train as a warrior and fight for his kingdom alongside his foster-brother, Tomas, but instead he is forced to follow a different path: a path that will lead him right into the heart of the enemy. And one that will change the course of the war - and two worlds - forever. So begins the most epic series in fantasy fiction, a tale that will cross worlds and generations. Magician is the first book in the Riftwar Saga. The trilogy continues with book two, Silverthorn.

Awesome story.
Magician is a brilliant store and I really enjoyed listening to it. But the Narrator desperately needs to work on his pronunciation of names of characters and places. eg: Arutha has a 'th' in it and is pronounced A-ruth-a not Arooter.

Excellent narration, but......
The narrator is brilliant with characterisation and I enjoyed his reading, but he mispronounced the most basic main-character names. Tomas is pronounced Toe-mass; Liam: Lie-am; Arutha: A-root-a; and Guy: Gee. This really bugged me. Minus half a star for each name. I wouldn't not buy the book because of it and if I had never read the books I would have given 5 stars.

Couldn't get into this
Oh dear . Where to start. The writing was clunky and forced... he said , she said started to wear after a while and the narrator made it really heavy going. Sorry but I am returning this one for an exchange

One of my favourites!
Magician is one of my favourite books and the audiobook didn't disappoint! Though I was frustrated by the narrator pronouncing "Arutha" as "Aruta".

great book
unfortunately the narrator pronounces various names and words in a weird way which distracts from a fantastic classic fantasy story

Finally!
It's been a long wait but we finally have this book on Audio. Overall, I don't mind Peter Joyce but he has no business attempting high-pitched feminine or elven voices. And I was a little disappointed in his choices for character accents. E.g. The Tsurani were Roman in my mind, but he gave them an oriental accent.
There were some editing mishaps in the last couple of hours: pauses in dialogue that make you wonder if we've moved on to the next scene.
As for the story, it's hardly as I recall but I enjoyed it none the less. I like the way it moves quickly, not dwelling unnecessarily. There might be a few too many characters, nothing that a handy character map couldn't assist with.

An adventure!
What a fantastic book. I began reading the book but found it difficult to find the time to sit down and delve into it fully.
Then I discovered the audiobook and listened to it for at least an hour each day while commuting or cleaning up.
I’ve read some people have issue with the performance, however I completely disagree. His character voices were distinct, the reading was flowing and there was no distraction from the story at all.
I can’t wait to start book #2!

Excellent
I don’t know why everyone is unhappy with the narrator’s pronunciation. While I’m sure after reading this for yourself, you would have the names a certain way in your head, I was expecting something awful based on all the negativity in previous reviews. As a first time reader, I thoroughly enjoyed his delivery! The whole book was fantastic, from characters to storyline, and this was made all the more better by Peter Joyce’s wonderful narration.
