Publisher's Summary

Where do you run when there is no escape? Where do you turn when the enemy within is as dangerous as the enemy unknown?

The year is 2322 and humanity is under attack. An engineered war between rival superpowers escalates even as the shadowy Metigen armada begins attacking colonies on the frontiers of settled space.

Individuals from across the galaxy fight for their own survival and to protect those they hold dear, while a group of unlikely allies race to expose a secret cabal. As the aliens draw ever closer, leaving utter destruction and death in their wake, the strongest defenders of Earth and Seneca fall to one another in a war of lies and misdirection.

Alex Solovy and Caleb Marano stand accused of terrorism and murder. In a desperate gambit to clear their names and find a way to defeat the invaders, they breach the dimensional portal at the heart of the Metis Nebula. In a strange, mystical realm where nothing is what it seems, they will uncover secrets about humanity's past and future - and one revelation which will change everything.

When faced with its greatest challenge, will humanity rise to triumph, or fall to ruin?

Aurora Rising is an epic tale of galaxy-spanning adventure, of the thrill of discovery and the unquenchable desire to reach ever farther into the unknown. It's a tale of humanity at its best and worst, of love and loss, of fear and heroism. It's the story of a woman who sought the stars and found more than anyone imagined possible.

    Story
"Not sure how I got started but..."

I'm likely in this for the long haul. Not that I'll rush out and buy book three as soon as it comes out, but I imagine I'll pick it up at some point. Vertigo continues the trend set by the first book of, despite it's frequent narrative shifts, of keeping the focus contained well enough not to feel like narrative space isn't being wasted when someone besides Alex or Caleb. Characters were the first book's strength and that continues here. I was invested in the characters enough that the ever frequent conspiracy scenes didn't divest me from enjoying things moment to moment.

However, one thing I find frustrating is how everyone seems to HAVE to pair off. I know that it is expected in this type of book, but at least in this instance it feels very forced. The characters are the series' strong suit, so when it turns out that everyone has to find a member of the opposite sex to feel their existence fulfilled I end up shaking my head. Or is it just that as a part time romance novel everyone needs a partner to bang? Alex and Caleb fuck like rabbits every time a door closes. It really feels like that should be enough.

    Story
    "Better than the first"

Man, that narrator is just so monotone. Now that I'm 20 hours in its not so bad but the narrator almost killed it for me. Stick with it though, since, this has been one of the most in depth sci fi's I have read since dune. Political systems, technology, characters are all really well thought out and act more or less like real world people.
    Really worth it.

"A good sequel to a fun, balanced sf adveture"

A good fun soft-sf romp. A good sequel to the previous book, continuing the story of the Aurora Rising trilogy.

    Story
"A decent story ruined by a wooden narrator"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

The romantic elements felt forced, and out of character - I would have preferred that things progressed in a more gradual organic manner for the two main characters. I actually quite enjoyed those two when they weren't focusing on each other.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Vertigo?

I honestly don;t remember - it was exceedingly difficult to focus on the story with the narrator's style.

How could the performance have been better?

Any time the narrator goes into elements of the story that are not dialogue her voice becomes dry and emotionless. her actual character portrayal wasn't bad - better than most...

Was Vertigo worth the listening time?

I feel neutral about that. I really loved the start of Aurora, but was having real trouble holding on for the end of the book. Vertigo was hard to hold on to from the start, even though i was interested in where the story was going.

    "Hmmm"

Story: Mills and Boon in Space. Chick-Sci-fi I guess.
Performance: To these UK ears, bizarre distracting over-enunciation of every second word and laughable foreign accents in the best traditions of Dick Van Dyke. Pyper Down! If only she would.
